Excited Evernote User 26
Note linking I was wondering if the following function exist as it would hugely automate the work assume you have 2 notes: note 1 and note 2. You want to link from note 1 to note 2 The process I am aware is is that you have to 1) look for note 2; 2) create link; 3) go to note 1 and copy link Is there a possibility that I coudl simply do 1) be in note 1 and create a link to note 2 via a short cut? Many other note taking apps I am aware can do this and its a huge time saver for building a 2nd brain (as most of the value lies in the connection between notes). Is there a function for this available pls? Link to comment

Offhand, I’m not sure how you can create a link to a note without first identifying that note in some way. Maybe I’m not understanding what you are looking for. Link to comment

Look for the "Add Note Link". On MacOS this is Option-Command-K: This was recently added and it allows you to not have to leave Note 1 to add a link to Note 2. You can get there on desktop and mobile by the the blue plus 'Insert' button -- "Insert Note Link" 5 Link to comment
Mike P 2,962
May not be relevant here, but you can also create a link to note 2 in note 1 by dragging note 2 from the note list into the body of note 1. 1 Link to comment

MvdH 487
Now that we are talking about note linking. I merge a lot of notes... Those back- and forth links, when I tried them when they were introduced, got lost as soon as you merge a few notes. I would have expected merged notes to still work automatically, why not. Don't you guys have trouble with this? 1 Link to comment

Good point. I don't think this is just a V10 issue. I think, but I can no longer check, that In legacy if you merged a note which was the target of a link, that note ceased to exist so the link no longer worked. There has never been the option to transfer that link to the new merged note.I think the arrival of backlinks helps, in that you can now at least see whether any of the notes you are planning to merge have been linked from other notes. Hence, in principle, you could manually remake the links (open each note that links to one of the notes you plan to merge in it's own window, merge, add the link to the new merged note to each linking note) I think having a merge option that did this for you would be really good. If, on the other hand, you merge notes which contain links, EN is clever enough to remake the backlink in the target notes to be to the new merged note. 1 Link to comment
MvdH 487
Thx for your answer. I can confirm the old-style link-to-notes also broke as soon as youy merged notes in Legacy. That's why I hoped for a better implementation. When I find time I'll send in a request somewhere, if such an option exists for evernote. 🙌👊👍 1 Link to comment
Level 5 PinkElephant 8,752 Posted June 19, 2023 Level 5 Share Posted June 19, 2023 From what I see, the link points to the unique note-ID. If this ID is lost, for example because the note is merged, the link stops to work. Backlinks are created (this is why they appear a little after linking a note) as an entry in the „donating“ note. They point as well to the note ID, here of the receiving note. This has several impacts, one is merging, the other is when exporting. The re-import creates new notes, with new IDs. Asking EN about it makes sense to me, I just don’t see an easy way around it. 1 Link to comment
Mike P 2,962
Something that might help (but cetainly doesn't solve the problem) would be the ability to copy the backlinks. I think this has been requested before, presumably for a different reason. If the backlinks were easily copyable, they could be pasted into the body of the note you planned to merge, hence providing a permanent record. It would then be easier to do the merge, copy the new merged note link and then go to each of the notes that linked to the original note and add the new link. Not pretty, but doable. EN also destroys all but one of the note URLs when merging and sometimes this is the only record of the source of the information in the note. (e.g. for clipped pdfs). Fortunately in this case, copying the noteURL into the body of the note is relatively easy, provided you remember to do it. 1 1 Link to comment
