How long does it take to sync?

I've created 16 duplicate records in 13 days, nine of which are from the scratch pad. I'm aware that this is a known issue. I've followed all of the tips in Tips for troubleshooting syncing issues, but nothing works.

I've read some users on mobile apps will force-sync. I can't believe this is the best solution. Surely with such a widespread problem with so many paying customers there must be a solution being announced today. Right?

So, how long does it take to sync? Does it change every time? What else can I do to mitigate this problem?

Thanks!

Hi, and welcome to the forums. I hear your frustration. My one question would be on the word "widespread." I never, or almost never, experience these issues. If 50 people report them here, and 100 times that many experience the problem without reporting here, that's still 5,000 or so users out of a couple hundred million. If you're one of the paying customers, you can always raise a support ticket (https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/requests/new). The forums are mainly user-to-user, which makes it hard to troubleshoot specific syncing issues. I don't mean to seem dismissive, because a persistent sync problem would be very annoying; but vociferous discussions on the forums can give the impression of a more widespread issue than really exists.

Basically sync depends on several aspects beyond EN:

  • Speed of the device, and may it be busy with other activities like larger up- or downloads ?
  • Speed and quality of the local network. When you test, watch out for the values for Ping, Jitter and Package Loss beside the usual speed metrics.
  • Type of network - an Ethernet connection will run with the same speed all of the time, whereas WiFi heavily depends on the number of devices active on the same channel (no, not only on the same network / SSID. It really is a frequency thing, and on 2.4GHz even the neighboring channels will interfere). You may have good conditions during the day, and when the neighbors get back in the evening, performance drops.

These are just a few hints. The only few cases when I had duplicates it was because I provoked them - and it was not easy to reach.

I sometimes go to the 'force sync' on mobile, but usually if I just wait about 10 seconds (depending on the internet speed) then things sync up for me OK. I think part of this is because I mostly create a lot of content on Desktop and so there is a lot for my mobile device to download and sync up when I first launch the app and I have most of my notebooks on my mobile set for offline use, so I believe it is downloading all the PDFs and images and everything to my device.

I think it'd be nice if there was some kind of sync progress bar or something -- at both a global and a note level - to give your more insight into what is going on.

Announced back in January actually by the CEO https://evernote.com/blog/ceo-update-january-2022/:

And most importantly, over the course of 2022, we will complete our multi-year journey to a more reliable, faster, and more modern sync architecture—the very backbone of the Evernote experience.
