Cleaning up especially large files/notes

Recommended Posts

Hi! I'm a Mac user and I feel that want to clean up Evernote erasing many files I feel I will never need again. So I was thinking to go with the largest notes first. To my big surprise I couldn't sort on file size in the app or on the web.

So I need suggestions how to do this, if this is even possible?

I just downloaded the Legacy version and THERE you could sort! So strange that the new "improved" Evernote is so much worse. So I could probably use the legacy to find large post and erase them there instead. Syncing will than fix the problem in the new version. Or perhaps I should just stick with the legacy as long as I'm allowed.

I will probably start phasing into using something like Apple Notes in the future seems it seems to be more future proof.

Oh, you found one out of several sorting options that does not exist, and now everything is ***** and sucks ?

And you are sure you want to be taken serious ? I have my doubts.

But anyhow: If you need sorting by size, it is one of the few features that have not made it to v10 (yet ?).

Not sure if serious. But you do recognize that downloading another, no longer even supported, app just to try if that helps one’s problem isn’t really speaking for Evernote’s best and is the most obvious workflow 2022?

Maybe you should consider that next time before answering.

Make a list of all features v10 and legacy. Pick what you like and what supports your use case. Enjoy …

Having legacy still working is part of the transition strategy of EN. It can’t be expect that with a newly coded app every detail will be available from the beginning.

But of course, you may cultivate a different opinion, and if you want to switch apps, just go ahead.

P.S. I am not aware that Apple Notes has a „sort by size“ feature. But of course I might be wrong.

Seems like v10 is on par with Apple Notes there since you can't sort by size on either (AFAIK). But, can you even see a list with all your notes and show the size in that list in Apple Notes? Maybe v10 still has a leg up in that department.

You may filter on specific attachments such as video, office files etc  , this in combination with the note size in the note list

edit: having said that, I don't understand why EN hasn't implemented this already, it's really a quick win, the "size" column should be enabled for sorting, that's all.

So please let EN know that you need this feature...

@Boot17 Apple Notes does not even show the note size, has no note information option, and of course can only sort by title, created or changed. And the sort options are not a simple click on a list - you need to go to app settings to change the sort options.

So I would say Point, Set and Match for Evernote !

@eric99 From what I see, the size field needs to be indexed (secondary index) to allow the sort by size. So it is probably not only a little arrow that is missing - and every index will be paid with a little performance. This said, of course it could be done, and it would help in some situations.

The sort happens on the result list at the client side:  I activated the developer tools and there is no network activity when sorting. The server database isn't involved at all.

But I agree, this is a nice to have but there are much more urgent issues to be solved first 🙂

New you say? Sure man… I've seen oak trees transition more quickly. They made a huge mistake releasing this "new" version. I don't think the jury is out on that.

I never claimed that Apple Notes had more or better features. But they are going in the right direction year after year. While EN is seemingly going in the other direction.

If someone wants more features they could just go to Obsidian. Wouldn't surprise me if Notes and Obsidian take all of Evernote's market share within the next three years.

If you mean … anybody should do his own thinking and through this can come to a different result. It would be a sad place if we would all agree on something.

Personally I don’t think an app that is now close to 40 releases in less than 2 years is in the class of „slow like an oak tree“. There are other apps where this image resonates - first among them is for me „EN Legacy“, at the time when it was still considered the „active“ app version. Boy, this was glacial for sure !

If you are happy with Obsidian, just go ahead. No criticism, if you like it, it is probably what you want / need / deserve. Apple Notes will in my opinion never „make it“. Easy to see why: If it would grow wings and push all the other cool note apps to the side, significant revenue would be lost in the AppStore. And I am sure we are not going to see this happen.

I fully agree about that, and what's even more important,  V10 releases are stable, no side effects, no regression. This is different from  EN legacy which I didn't dare to install  unless I really needed it and when it had been verified and used by the community.
