(Archived) Mac version vs. Windows

Recommended Posts

I would like to know the differences between the mac version of evernote and the windows version...

Many people post comments, some like the program , other dislike it... but don't always say wich version they talk about.

I just saw a youtube demo of evernote (Mac) and i was surprised to see a completly different GUI than the windows version.

Thumbnails , etc...

Could it be that evernote is more featured in the Mac version?

I'm still waiting for a windows version that has more features ... like v2.2 ( windows)

Like buttons on the note bar for tags, delete,

The ability to automatically add the tag "to do" as soon as we insert a check box ( and of course change the tag to "DONE" automatically when the checkbox is checked), ability to do filter ( like in categories) , ability to remove/add tags when we drag a note into one category(2.2)

(sigh):( .... and me that was exited to submit some exiting v2.2 feature request... i found out about v3 going to the forum...

i don't think it matters anymore (sigh)

Does the Mac version has any of those features ? :?

The Mac version was developed using a different set of tools (from Apple) with an intent to follow Apple UI guidelines, so there are a lot of small ways that the clients differ in the UI. We're working to unify the features and behavior through the beta, but here's a short list of notable differences:

Mac has a "thumbnail" view for notes

Windows has a "tape" view for notes

Windows has local image recognition

Windows has ink support

Windows has "integrated" clippers in applications like Outlook, Mac has a copy-paste clipper

etc.

I'm not sure I understand all of the features you mention ... both clients have ToDo checkboxes, saved searches, tag assignment, etc. But I think that, other than the "thumbnail" note view, there are no major features that are only available in the Mac client.

Thanks for your answer Dave,

Today i had few minutes to check en3 further and i've found how checkbox works in this version ( I usually don't need to read help section.. :? )

In en2.2 , the category that was named "to-do" could be placed anywhere in the organizer panel... as it was a category. but now it is in the attribute section... and can't be moved !

The way i setup my workstation in 2.2 is by having in the panel : " todo's" , " Done" , user1 category, user2 category, user3 category , project1 , project2 etc...

and i delete everything else to only see what i need. ( I'm kind of a power user, but my fellow workers are the... opposite...lol the simple, the better... and since it's for work)

As for the other feature i was talking about,

If i make a note and want to assign it to user1, i drag the note on user1.

in 2.2, i was able to put a rule that when i assign that category(ex:user2), i could also assign other categories or unassign categories.

In my example: my note has category "user1".. .now i drag this note to user2. Since i have setuped a rule that removes "user1" in user2's propreties, ... as soon as i drag my note onto "user2" ... automatically user1 category was unchecked from my note.

Can we reporduce this behaviour with en3 and tags ?

it would be nice to have a different set of tags for each notebook. If i have a notebook called work and another called Home, i dont have to see all tags related to work ( project 1, 2, 3, my work team, etc...)

that was somthing that was good of v2.2 ... i could load my database called home and have only my home categories to work with in my workspace.

An alternative to loading different databases could be to manage our organizer panel the way we like it, based on what notebook we chose, and have the option ton only see tags that belong to that notebook only ( or we could say " tags that are tagged to as specific notebook" ;) ).

While looking in the help menu, i saw this in the tag section:

in the help file i see:

en3_tag_help.gif

en3_tag_help2.gif

but on my windows EN3 i see:

en3_tag_myapp.gif

is it normal i don't have this tag button?

Thanks for your help,

Miguel.

Welcome to the world of the beta. If you read through older posts in the forum about the beta, you'll find that a lot of your comments have already been raised, and for the most part, shot down.

Tags are no longer smart - you cannot have an automatic tag the way you could have a an automatic category in 2.2 (e.g., assigned when a keyword is found).

Tags are not equal to attributes are not equal to saved searches. All three are now separate beasts. Tags can be organized hierarchically, but it doesn't mean anything. Attributes and Saved Searches (which replace our smarter categories) are stored in a flat, sorted, list. You can have a maximum of 32 saved searches right now. I just read that you're limited to 1000 tags.

The icons for tag/delete were originally in 3b, but were removed during on of the later updates. Now you have to mouse all the way to the top of the screen, or use the keyboard shortcuts.

All tags show for any notebook. If a tag has no notes in it, it is greyed out.

Anyway, I would suggest that you browse through the forum on the beta and see what else has been going on ;)

I add to Crane very good resume:

-queries do not work the same on different platforms (so saved searches using tag abreviations in desktop version will be useless on the web or on Iphone).

-you cannot save queries on Iphone

-same for tags (you must use tag:"everstuf" on one, tag:ever on the other and/or tag:ever* on the third

-behavior of negated tags is misbehaving

-you have to remember your tags on the iphone (it won't show you the existing ones)

-settings are not kept (thumbnail or not)

- the all/any search is tremendously limiting and if combined with a negated condition its a mess....

others....

Thanks for your replys,

I did read a lot of posts regularly since 2-3 weeks now..

but after seeing the video on youtube with the mac GUI i started to doubt that the software was evolving more rapidly on the mac, and have different features than the win version.

I've searched through the forum about the Tag button without succes, so i specifically asked to make sure.( thanks crane for clarification on earlier 3beta) After i read the help menu and saw those images, i though in my head " someone must have a latest version to have taken screen shots like that" .. i was just wondering after my doubts of the Mac version.

When Dave responded, for some reason i had an impression that i needed to explain the feature to make sure it was to be included in the next release ...lol..don't know what i was thinking...

Sorry for those doubts...

Thanks to ThomasStraten for the comparison between platforms.

am i the only one not a fan of the tape view?

i much prefer the mac interface

I didn't like it when I first started using EN a year and a half ago. It's grown on me. If someone has a better idea, I'm all ears, like Prince Charles. :)

my suggestion would be give me the option to turn it off

i want when i click on a note title in the note list to only see the note i selected, it drives me crazy when i scroll down and end up in the next note, from a ui experience that is not what i wanted to do, i can see how some people enjoy it but make it optional.

also the thumbnail preview concept from the mac side is nice, sometimes i can visually identify my notes quicker than text.

i like the paging and tab concept from onenote, it is more in line with how i use a real physical notebook, i'm more of a scraps collector in note taking than a journaler which is what i think the timeline is more useful for.

I knew something was bothering me a bit, but I didn't know exactly what. This helped me figure it out -- thanks, Chris!

Currently in the Windows version (the only one I've used much at all), there are two scrollbar-like things to the right of the timeline window. At the top there's a scrollbar that covers the entire timeline, and at the bottom there's a widget that lets you smooth-scroll the timeline up or down.

What I think is missing is a per-note scrollbar that appears in the selected note and just scrolls within that note. (This idiom of global and local scrollbars isn't too much of a stretch; take a look at tvguide.com/listings, where the actual listings are in an embedded window with a separate scrollbar from the whole-page scrollbar further to the right.)

I'm like Chris -- I really don't want to scroll off the selected note (except when I do want that, of course  ).

I'm having similar feelings. The new list of notes (not the note list) view is very much like the tape, but without some of the issues of the tape. Like "What note am I currently in?", and "When I scroll, am I scrolling the note or the tape?". I often found myself having to switch modes. With time, I might like the new Mac way better. But the Windoze version doesn't have this. Strange.
