Scott Widmann 0
Saw that Evernote can publish direct to HTML which seems useful, but why do that if I can just run Wordpress on my mobile device? Also - opening an Evernote file in Notepad++ shows latitude, longitude, and altitude information instead of the note contents. Looks like I might be publishing my coordinates. A previous response mentions privacy concerns, not sure how I could get around this without a lot of extra HTML editing. Also - Wordpress is free and already formatted. Seriously considering a major switch to my mote taking but I have to save to PDF then save to word to even get the notes into a usable file format. Link to comment
Level 5 PinkElephant 5,172 Posted April 17, 2022 Level 5 Share Posted April 17, 2022 Wordpress is a content management system to build websites. I would really not compare it to EN. So maybe better define (and describe) your use cases. I doubt there is a large overlap. There is a service called https://postach.io that allows you to use an EN notebook as blogging platform. You put a note into that notebook, and it gets published. About the coordinates: It is quite transparent how this information gets into the notes. They are stored in note information and can for example be used to locate notes that were created in a certain place. To avoid have this recorded, switch off GPS access for EN on the device. You can review it in note information. https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/209005037 Link to comment
Scott Widmann 0
I will bet you $1 million that everything I have done with Evernote I can do with Wordpress and a great deal more (for free)by using the draft page function with layout and formatting functions at the level of a marketing professional. Very stupid of me to not realize this sooner. Never had a single use case for tagging my notes with GPS either although now Im considering building that function into a Mapbox Page. No doubt people already do this with Evernote, but $10 a month with limited options for import and export abd constant crashing on Android / Kindle just doesnt make sense. If the Android support was here maybe I would have stayed longer. Link to comment

Perhaps but it will take a lot longer to set up and maintain- and it won't be free if you want to use a full range of wp plugins. You will need a domain and hosting. WP is a blog content management system Evernote is a lot more. 1 Link to comment
Level 5 PinkElephant 5,172 Posted April 17, 2022 Level 5 Share Posted April 17, 2022 If somebody is happy with Wordpress (and seems not to honor all other features EN has), there is no reason not to use it. IMHO in this case choosing EN at all shows a poor selection process (bad definition of the use case, wrong evaluation of features etc.). I wouldn’t place a bet that the enthusiasm for WordPress has a more solid foundation. Disclaimer: I use WP to build my websites only and can’t positively judge about its use as a note & documents app. A very far cry … Link to comment
Scott Widmann 0
Host Locally on Mobile - Wordpress has instructions on how to do it, or host on Desktop. Issue: lost mobile, lost notes, unless a regular backup is set. No plugins needed for features that match Evernote. Use Case is: take notes for free, backup to devices, and publish to web when needed. This is a trap, I'm out. Link to comment
Level 5 PinkElephant 5,172 Posted April 18, 2022 Level 5 Share Posted April 18, 2022 A very restricted use case, as expected before. For what is described as use case a Free Account would do. In general EN is not meant to be a web publishing tool - for this in fact a content manager like WordPress is the better choice. For note taking it is not. Link to comment

Scott Widmann 0
Cheaper (free) and easier, without gps logging: EMAIL draft mode, any software. Link to comment

Scott Widmann 0
A forum Troll and heavy Evernote user for close to a year who wrote over 100 pages in the app in multiple notebooks and who used the latest features, then went against his closest mentors advice by dropping this software because of its heavy fees, lack of Android support, difficult to export from file extension and realization that publishing from this software wasnt going to work as well as a lack of clarity on why GPS coordinates are included in notes although I can definitely understand how that fits into a long term development roadmap. But yea - a troll. Truth is - Evernote is not a note taking software, it is intended to be something completely different in the next few years. My guess is some kind of mobile/AR/VR tagging and authoring software over the long haul but for now I sure cant afford it. Link to comment
Level 5 Dave-in-Decatur 1,996 Posted June 14, 2022 Level 5 Share Posted June 14, 2022 Sigh. I'll probably regret this, but.... Evernote is a fine piece of note-taking software. It sucks as book-writing software, authoring software, publish-ready software.... Evernote takes notes. It lets you take them on multiple device types and OSes, and sync among all of those. (Including Android, for years now.) It lets you organize them in various ways, and search them. It lets you add images and documents to them, and search those too. Notes ... it's great at notes. Clearly it's not designed to do what you need to do; absolutely look elsewhere--might Scrivener be an option? But kindly spare the world your grief that Evernote doesn't do what it wasn't meant to do. (And maybe your speculations on what it's going to become that it also isn't meant to do, but that's another discussion.) Dang, now I feel like a billy goat gruff. 1 Link to comment
