Help! Can't Save Note As A Template

Recommended Posts

I've created a note that I would like to save as a template.

Unfortunately, when I select the three dots in the upper right, the "Save as Template" line is greyed out. (See image)

How do I get this "un-greyed out" so I can save it to my gallery of templates?

Thanks!

This has been reported before and a workaround given. To get a quicker response it would definitely be worth you learning how to search the forums!

Just add a # and a SPACE at the top of the note (this will add a Large Header) and the greyed option to "save as template" will be unlocked.

Then you can delete de # and the SPACE (Large Header) but the "save as template" will still be available.

Hope this helps.

In my case, it didn't even seem to be "adding a header" that was needed in order to get the error to clear (and the option to cease being greyed out). For me I just made a couple additional edits to the note, then went to another note and came back, and the option was there again for me. However...

...here's another potentially related issue I've experienced when trying to save a note as a template... For about an hour the other day I tried to save a note as a template and it would return the error "unable to save the content of this note as a template". It was so frustrating. I tried taking different elements of the note off and adding them back, etc., and nothing worked.

Then I realized that when trying to save the note as a template it first brings up a dialog box where you can change the name of the template (something other than the name of the note), and every time I'd been trying to save the template and gotten that error I'd also been trying to change the template name right before clicking save. When I stopped trying to change the name, and just let it 'save as template' with the existing note name... it worked just fine. So this could be another 'save as template' issue to resolve.

Interesting. I wasn't able to reproduce this. Were you using any special characters etc in the new title that might explain why we are seeing different behaviour?

Thanks for sharing. The #<space> trick doesn't seem to work for me at all.

If I make any discoveries, I'll be sure to share them here. Has anyone found any other hacks for making the template function appear?

TIA

Free users can use the predefined templates.

They can’t save into the „My templates“ section.

Workarounds:

Save a predefined note in a „Templates“ notebook, or in shortcuts. Select the note, duplicate it. Use the duplicate as new note. Works on all devices.

Set up a note as you like it, then export it as an ENEX file to your computer. When you double click the ENEX file, it will import a copy of the note into EN as a new note. This only works on desktops.

Same problem here:

EN Professional 10.81.4  MacOS Sonoma

I kept seeing the greyed out Save as Template despite the suggestions above.

I was able to immediately save as a template on my iPad  (iOS 17). Then after sync, the iPad template shows up on my desktop EN.

There's a bug in the desktop version, I guess.

Same here.  Mac 14.4.1 and Evernote desktop 10.81.4.  I cannot save any note as a template (Save as Template greyed out).  The "create a heading" work around/trick doesn't change anything.  Like @snsokstan, I can create a template on my iPad and then use it on desktop.

Does anyone know anything about this or is it just a bug that needs to be fixed?

It's an old bug - fixed once or twice before - and now apparently came back again. This very much sums up the current situation with Evernote. Everything is totally random.
