extremely limited zoom factor for PDF viewing

Recommended Posts

Since an update about one or two years ago the possible zoom factor for viewing PDFs on Android devices has been limited to about 200%.

It was at least 400 or 500% before. I was hoping, that the devs will fix that, but unfortunately nothing happened ever since. Watching architectural plans or similar detailed PDFs is almost impossible now on mobile devices

If anyone is unhappy about this issue as well, please give this post a like, so the evernote dev team might give this issue priority.

The main update was a year ago - with the release of v10, the clocks were resetted for all platforms.

This limitation of the Zoom factor seems specific to the Android app - on iOS the Zoom range goes much further than 2x. The main deficiency I see on iOS is no Zoom at all in annotation mode. This makes it difficult to precisely point out a detail, because you can’t place the annotation marker to the right spot. I think this is the same on Android, and should be fixed as well when optimizing the Zoom functionality.

With version 8.13 the PDF was opened in a external PDF viewer, with 10 there is a internal viewer, and the zoom is to small to read some pdf on a smartphone. Search within pdf is too not possible.

One reason more to say goodbye

I think he was referring to no search option once the .pdf file is opened in the Evernote app:

Symbol in the upper right corner opens window with saving/sharing options instead of opening with alternative app. So if I want to open the file with other app I first have to save the file on my phone and then open it. Unnecessary steps.
This is what I get when I click on the symbol:

And this is what I get once I save the file on my phone and want to open it:

This is another issue for me on v10. I don't want Evernote to open my .PDF files because of limited functionality options. I want to choose my own app.
The same issue was in previous versions of v10 regarding www link opening. At first links opened just inside the Evernote. Then they made changes to open a file with native internet browser. I hope they can do the same for PDF (and other files?).

In my case, with v10.20, with pressing of this share button I got also Acrobat reader offered and when selected, pdf is opened in it.

What is interesting,  I have also some other pdf readers installed, e.g. Xodo, but they are not offered for sharing.

This is what it's strange. They should fix it and offer others apps to open pdf files.

Acrobat reader app is a half baked accidental exception. If you look closely below the Acrobat reader icon there is some text: "Share link vi...". So it is meant to share a pdf file over the Adobe cloud. Once the link is created you can swipe the window down and actually scroll, search, share, edit... pdf file. But I don't want to upload my pdf files to Adobe cloud! For me, this is just a temporary workaround solution. I want a proper solution to just open pdf files. That's it.

For search in PDFs to work you need to be logged in as a subscriber.

But since you are leaving anyhow, no need to bother you with such nitty bitty details …

When trying to search, are you in viewing mode, or in annotation mode ?

In viewing mode search works through the magnifying glass top right. It even builds a preview with all hits, allowing to go to one of them by a tap. No search in pdfs when in annotation mode, however.

This is how it looks in EN 10.20 (iOS). To search inside of a PDFs one hits the magnifying glass, enter the search term and get the results. Since iOS and Android app are virtual twins, I expected (maybe wrongly) that this works similarly on both mobile platforms.

Weird - it seems the apps are not as twinny as I thought they were. What shows in EN is not even the same what shows when I open a pdf in the iOS Files app. So they don’t simply borrow a function set from iOS, because the original iOS pdf setup is different to what EN shows.

And if you use the share button to open the pdf file in a pdf reader, no pdf reader will be shown.

The only way is download (even it is from an offline Notebook) to a separate directory, go to your filemanger select it to  open it with the pdf reader.

Evernote 10, both Windows and Android increased very much the amount of clicks.

That's correct and makes Evernote actually less workable, than in the previous versions.

I am currently working on a building site and would wish to use my Android tablet to show the blueprints to the workers. Clicking, downloading and reopening additional Apps is just too time consuming and not workable anymore
