Two-step verification

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I enabled the two-step verification on my Evernote account using a password management app. At first I thought this wasn't possible since the page mentioned only the Google Authenticator app. Now it says I'm using Google Authenticator app, which is not true. I'm able to use another password management app correctly but I think the setup process was a little misleading, because I really thought Google Authenticator app was the only possibility, even though it was not.

Would it be possible to mention that you can use also other apps besides Google Authenticator? I expected that Evernote would ask about other apps after I skipped the Google Authenticator option, but it didn't.

Cheers,

Walter K.

This misleading communication about the (Google) authenticator was reported to EN already a while ago. It is probably not among the first issues on their backlog, hopefully it will be changed one day.

Basically you can use any device or app that is able to provide the one time codes needed. Although most can do, my current top pick for the job is Authy . It allows to generate codes on a number of devices, which makes handling 2FA access easy to use.

Hello PinkElephant,

It's good to hear that the issue was already been reported to Evernote. I didn't know that so I decided to make a new topic.

I personally use Bitwarden for saving my passwords and creating those one-time codes. Even though I'd say I'm quite skilled with computers, at first I wasn't sure whether it's possible use other apps than Google Authenticator. I've never used it so I thought there may be some kind of feature that other apps lack and therefore it would not be possible to use other apps. But as I said in my first message, I managed to save the necessary TOTP link into Bitwarden.

Yes, it seems to be an easy challenge to change that to a neutral Authenticator App.

Personally I use a different app for the second factor. My 1Password would do one time ciphers as well. But if - theoretically - somebody would get access to it, it would be one factor again: Password and 2FA at the same place.

Thus I decided to use a different app for the authentication. What I like with Authy is that it works on all devices, seamlessly. Most times I get the code from my Apple Watch, which is fast and convenient.
