Evernote for Win or Mac? Wanna buy new laptop

Recommended Posts

Hello guys!

I wanna buy new laptop, I am thinking Mac Book Pro, Spectre or Dell xps.

Since I am using mainly (80%) evernote for my work I am wondering if evernote on iOS performance is similar to windows or is much worse/better (on version 10 of EV)?

I know that ev.10 has its own issues on both mac and windows

I am also using 2 additonal monitors, one through vga driver, the other one with USB (on my current pc asus laptop) I wonder if I could do that on the Macbook Pro - probbaly would have to buy vga adapter and then use also usb adapter.

Any tips are super welcome! What you guys recommend?

Mac EN 10.8.4 is running well on my new macbook air. The app is fast and the laptop stays cool. Then, again, it's also working well on a 10-year old imac using OS 10.13.6.  (I can't speak for WIndows).

iOS apps don't currently run on a mac, but reportedly will at some time in the future.

My only warning is that after installing EN on a new machine, it will run, but it can take a long time for a new database to be created: this happens in small fits and starts. Until the database is fully up to date, the performance may be fine while online, but poor while offline. This will be especially true for a large database (e.g. 17 GB, 32,000 notes, in my case), and presumably will be true regardless of OS. Other than examining the database folder, a simple test for completeness is to search for a common, simple, word in your notes—such as "help". If there is a difference between the number of hits when searching online versus offline you will know that the database is still updating. I recommend leaving the app open continuously, if possible.

I don't have any reason to think that a new macbook will have any problems driving an external monitor.

(BTW we all have our preferred OS, but in my case I finally persuaded my significant other to move to a mac. I no longer have to spend hours troubleshooting her old Windows machine. Yeah!)

Yes I used Mac before for creating music and dj'ing.

I am buying new Mac Pro M1

I am very happy to hear that the issues/slow/lag is not so heavy as on Windows (unbearable). I have 31000 notes.

Other challenges are 1) ability to connect 2 monitors, I ve researched that only 1 monitor can be added, but I hope to add another one through USB adapter (like in my pc now).

2) To run the win-software for my work using the Wine app (I've also read there were some challneges with that with the new M1 Mac).

With M1 Macs:

1) There are people who managed to connect more than 1 monitor - just be aware it is a workaround. The safe way for a 2-monitor -M1-setup is a Mac mini.

2) Running Windows is not yet supported on the M1 Macs. There are 2 possible ways this will change:

First maybe Microsoft will release a new Windows on ARM version. However, even from the Windows software pool many programs will not run on ARM equipped Windows computers. Probably most of those that are running on this castrated Windows are available for Mac natively as well.

Second the companies offering virtual machines for Windows on Mac like Parallel will offer new versions that can run Windows on an Mx-Mac. There are rumors, 8but up to now AFAIK no announcements.

WINE is not stable, I would not use it for anything I need to get my job done.

What about crossover? I have seen many YouTube’s with how people are running even games on m1 with crossover? Isn’t that possible yet ? That’s very bad news as the main software I use for my job run only on windows

These games run on intel Macs as MacOS software - the code is translated to M1 by Rosetta 2. The same does not work for Windows software, that used to run on the Intel Macs.

On the intel Macs, there are two ways to run Windows:

With MacOS you get BootCamp: If you install it, you can select when starting the Mac to boot MacOS or Windows. If you boot Windows, you are running a (nice and expensive) Windows computer. If you boot MacOS, you have to quit it completely and restart the Mac if you want to run Windows again. There is no switching. But it comes for free.

Or you get a Virtual Machine Manager that allows to run Windows in a VM inside of MacOS. The best known solution is probably Parallels. You still need a Windows license that runs inside of the VM. And it is a subscription, because they need to modify the VM each year when Apple releases a new MacOS. But when you want to use Windows, you simply fire up the VM inside of MacOS, start Windows and then use the software. It even lets you share the same folders as the MacOS, so for example exchanging files is very simple.

For M1 there is no more BootCamp, and up to now no virtual machines that allow to run Windows. Parallels is for sure working on getting Windows to run on an M1 machine, but there is no timeline until release. It may be there next month, or it may not be there in a year.

As I said I would question if you really need to run that piece of Windows software. Often there are browser versions available to replace it, or Mac software able to run and work on the same files, without the need to install exactly that program.

About gaming, even when many games are nicely running on M1s, Macs are not build to be gaming computers. For high end gaming a Mac can’t compete with a dedicated gaming PC.

Thanks a lot.

Unfortunately there is no alternative to that software I use as it is quite niche branch (astrology) and there is no alternative for the work I want to do with it. So what would be the best way to run it? It is the only soft from windows I need, rest I can get from Mac versions or web based. I understand that I can’t use it with the standard Wine? Also crossover the 60€ version won’t me to run this? I don’t want any parallel system like installing full windows I just want small emulator for small software. What would be your advice for this ?

Maybe …

Wine is not really regarded to be a professional product, it is more an open source project with mixed results in the past. It may work, but IMHO it is nothing you want to use for anything that you need to make a living.

Even when the integrated GPU of the M1s is pretty good, the M1 does not support external GPUs. An eGPU was often used when you needed stronger graphic performance on a notebook in the past. With Macs it was a very good solution, when apps supported the Macs Metal graphics engine. Metal makes use of all available GPUs, pooling the computing power.

As I say, the Mx is currently the hot new contender, so I think there will be solutions to run Windows on these machines. The question remains when and for free or for a price.

If you don't mind Google and if you are staying in Evernote and online most of the time, you may want to consider a chromebook. That would have been my nr. 1 choice today if I was going to shop. I have all platforms at home and I bought Google Chromebook for my parents, and boy, I was hooked on that machine right away. Evernote now trying to build the apps on the common code with the web so while apps suck when they run in legacy environments, it performs well on Android and Browser environment - go figure.

If you source Chromebook, I would strongly recommend going with 16 gb ram at minimum and recommend top of the line Google or Samsung chromebook for performance.

I just bought mac and I am very happy abouy it. One cannot compare the speed of Ev10 on Mac and Win, so much difference! Working in the Win version was horror! Maybe here is not pefect but its huge huge difference. At least now, hope it will not slow down

Thanks for tips guys

It works! Via crossover..

That's a very good idea so far. I also want to buy a new laptop too. But this time, my budget is very tight. I just looking for something that is good and reliable. I want to play casino games with this one. Can you please the signs of trustworthy casino https://theverybesttop10.com/signs-of-a-trustworthy-online-casino/ What do you suggest?

WE're not really the place to come for advice on which laptop to purchase. The previous contributions are very helpful in knowing how Evernote will run but casino games is outwith our experience ;)

I tried to use MacBook for my work, but it is an irritating process. It is hard to install anything new, and it is more expensive to use the simplest programs. If you’re used to windows, it will be hard for you to switch. Windows office is a perfect thing for work, and it contains anything we need to do, though it has an uninteresting interface. People who like ‘asthetics’ and want to please their eye with each move in their work will probably choose ios. However, I’m not one of them; I chose everything practical. That’s why I like dell XPS 15 9570 and the windows system

If you use Windows, you are bound to x86 architecture (and always a power outlet close to you), or a badly implemented and supported Windows on ARM variant.

The only well performing notebook that will take you through a hard days work on a single charge are MacBooks with an Mx processor, from Air to Pro.

Beside this MacOS is a properly designed operating system with a high level of inherent security - far superior to Windows with its crooked user permission handling. NTFS as file system does not know from birth that some users should not have access to some files ".Just a few examples , read some, think about. Good luck.
