Search Filter to Exclude Tag

Hi, I am using Evernote Mac 10.6.9 and was wondering how do I go about excluding a specific tag in my searches? 

I tried the -tag:xyz syntax in the search box, but that doesn't seem to work.

-tag:xyz works for me     
Please post your exact search.  My example is     tag:* -tag:xyz

Ah I missed the most important part of the syntax. Too add tag:*

It works. Many thanks for the advice!
