longtimeuser3 2 Posted December 5, 2020 Posted December 5, 2020 Hi Evernote, System: MacBook Air 2019 macOS Big Sur 16gb memory 1.6 ghz dual core Evernote on my Mac has been utilizing from 62 to 126% of my CPU for the past 4 hours. Ever since I upgraded to Big Sur, Evernote has had high utilization. It's also consuming a lot of memory from 2.1GB to 3.2GB for past 4 hours (and since upgade). What is Evernote doing to fix these performance issues for Mac users? Thank you, Lance 1

Probably nothing at all until someone reports the details to Support and can supply the logs to show where the excess activity is taking place... although if this is connected with an app update, the extra activity might be a one-time overuse due to Evernote getting the new database installed and up to speed.
longtimeuser3 2 Posted December 5, 2020 Author Posted December 5, 2020 Thank you. I'll see if that's the case (new db install) 1
Ashoke 1 Posted December 7, 2020 Posted December 7, 2020 i'm hitting the exact same issue, consistently. all the same information as above. 1
kcatmull 2 Posted December 11, 2020 Posted December 11, 2020 I am also having the same issue without having yet upgraded to Big Sur -- still on Catalina. It was fine for the first day or so but it's unusable right now. I sent the logs to support. 1
EmmanuelG 1 Posted January 21, 2021 Posted January 21, 2021 Same here. Very high CPU load after some browsing / editions through my notes. I have to restart Evernote to get back to normal CPU usage - for some time. Happens since last update. Mac mini mid-2010, Core 2 Duo 2,4 GHz, 16 GB RAM. macOS High Sierra.
EmmanuelG 1 Posted January 21, 2021 Posted January 21, 2021 (edited) High CPU usage solved with version 10.6.9 on macOS. Edited January 22, 2021 by EmmanuelG Typo 1
John Dimm 0 Posted January 22, 2021 Posted January 22, 2021 Hit a key and CPU shoots to 103%. Wait a long time and it eventually goes down to 4%. Then hit a key again and it goes to 103% again. Mojave System Version: macOS 10.14.6 (18G5033) Here it is at 92.9% Kernel Version: Darwin 18.7.0
Level 5 PinkElephant 8,996 Posted January 22, 2021 Level 5 Posted January 22, 2021 And EN version ? It seems the issue was fixed with EN 10.6.9. If it continues maybe do a complete uninstall / reinstall.
eric99 1,090 Posted January 22, 2021 Posted January 22, 2021 I have seen this several times in the latest windows version as well: multiple cores were occupied endlessly. Killing EN and restarting solved the problem.
everc 5 Posted January 30, 2021 Posted January 30, 2021 Absolutely high CPU load remains unchanged, despite uninstalling Evernote, then applying App Cleaner and rebooting my MacBook Pro and then downloading and reinstalling Evernote from the Evernote website evernote20210130.pdf

stepru 3 Posted June 17, 2021 Posted June 17, 2021 Evernote helper (renderer) is eating my RAM on Mac. What can I do?
Level 5 PinkElephant 8,996 Posted June 18, 2021 Level 5 Posted June 18, 2021 When it happens, quit the app cmd-q, and restart. Only closing it won’t work.

Level 5 PinkElephant 8,996 Posted June 18, 2021 Level 5 Posted June 18, 2021 That is the current workaround, user to user. No other solution until EN delivers a fix. Since the framework used by EN is based on Chrome, I have my doubts how far the resources usage can be lowered in the end. 1
Weining 0 Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 Exactly same issue. It makes my mac fan keep working which is very noisy, and annoying...
Level 5 PinkElephant 8,996 Posted June 28, 2021 Level 5 Posted June 28, 2021 Cmd-q and start again. There are reports it is getting better, but probably there is not a single cause.
redeye 9 Posted July 25, 2021 Posted July 25, 2021 Mojave 10.14.6 Legacy EN 7.14 = RAM usage idle 5 mins after launch is 275MB Latest EN 10.17.8 = RAM usage idle 5 mins after launch is 696MB. EN 10 clearly uses much more memory to just load and display the note list. In EN 10 click on the Home icon in sidebar and memory usage 886MB. Its a pity these newer apps are written with little respect for machines that have only 4GB or 8GB of RAM. We do have other applications to run, please don't take it all Evernote!
Level 5 PinkElephant 8,996 Posted July 25, 2021 Level 5 Posted July 25, 2021 EN legacy is a app written natively for the Mac. Everything is coded for the Mac, it can’t share much with other platforms. In itself it is optimized, but maintaining it is a big problem. Thus no new features for a long time. EN legacy is nested in a framework. This is basically a browser without a front end. The app handles the program logic, the framework communicates with the devices OS. What you see is mainly the browser backend consuming resources. The apps code can be shared over platforms - thus we get new features, but others (possibly not supported by the framework) are missing. No easy way to tell what is better. What I am quite sure of: EN would have killed itself by a continued stalemate without innovation.
kkweng 0 Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 So EV is slow. Is there something in our control to make it more usable ? e.g. I have about 8500 notes. Can I separate them into different databases somehow (not just different notebooks), even if it means I can't have access to everything at once ? Does it matter if I'm using stacks or not ? What about types of content (eg screenshots vs web clippings)
Level 5 PinkElephant 8,996 Posted July 29, 2021 Level 5 Posted July 29, 2021 The easiest solution is to install the legacy client. Personally I am on a similar note count, and I don’t regard EN v10 as being slow on my Mac. It is slower than legacy, but fast enough for my usage. V10 has a tendency to run slow on large notes, so try to create smaller individual notes instead of very large ones. What may be relevant is your network, that is the internet connection plus the local network. Use an ethernet cable if possible, not WiFi. If it must be WiFi use a 5GHz network, not the 2.4GHz band.
JoPo 0 Posted April 22, 2022 Posted April 22, 2022 FYI - I recently updated my mac from Catalina to Big Sur, a few days later I was prompted by Evernote to upgrade to 10.35.3 when I launched it. I am now on 10.35.3-mac-ddl-public (3355) Editor: v146.1.18003 Service: v1.51.2 (And prior to that I was on the latest version supported by Catalina - I'm sorry I don't know what my previous version was) I did so and I thought all was well. But I was also running a few large downloads and the system fans spun up to high. It's also my home Plex Media Server so it will sometimes be streaming and under load. I didn't think much about it until I returned today to find the fans still running loudly and when I checked - ShipIt was pinning a single core at almost 100% CPU for about 19 hours. I did a bit of research about the issue and then I force quit ShipIt and Evernote spontaneously relaunched. It appears Shipit got stuck partway through the update process and was racing away. Here is the content of the the ShipIt_stderr.log - you can see that ShipIt reported it quit on Apr-21 at 17:34 - but it did not exit and stayed looping. I killed the ShipIt process on Apr-22 at 13:13, which caused Evernote to relaunch 2022-04-21 17:34:12.830 ShipIt[2140:13878] Detected this as an install request 2022-04-21 17:34:13.308 ShipIt[2140:13920] Beginning installation 2022-04-21 17:34:17.501 ShipIt[2140:13920] Moved bundle from file:///Applications/Evernote.app/ to file:///var/folders/9b/y9gwrbg11mz4ptvfc3m_1py80000gn/T/com.evernote.Evernote.ShipIt.bzAa9ZzL/Evernote.app 2022-04-21 17:34:17.502 ShipIt[2140:13920] Moved bundle from file:///var/folders/9b/y9gwrbg11mz4ptvfc3m_1py80000gn/T/com.evernote.Evernote.ShipIt.eH7kyd2e/Evernote.app to file:///Applications/Evernote.app/ 2022-04-21 17:34:17.590 ShipIt[2140:13920] Couldn't remove owned bundle at location file:///var/folders/9b/y9gwrbg11mz4ptvfc3m_1py80000gn/T/com.evernote.Evernote.ShipIt.eH7kyd2e/Evernote.app, error NSError { domain: NSCocoaErrorDomain, code: 4, description: "“Evernote.app” couldn’t be removed.", failureReason: "The file doesn’t exist.", underlying error: NSError { domain: NSPOSIXErrorDomain, code: 2, description: "The operation couldn’t be completed. mrkmax 12 Posted February 25 Posted February 25 I've been delaying installing the new version of Evernote for a few years due to performance issues, and I agree with earlier users that the easiest solution is to install the Legacy client. However, it appears that Evernote will be forcing users off the legacy client at the end of March so I was curious if anyone has solved / mitigated these performance issues on the Mac so that the new version is usable. I was considering upgrading my machine which only has 4MB of RAM; however, the original poster had 16MB of RAM and still encountered the same performance issues. Any advice? Thanks! -mark

There are quite a few Mac users out there who seem to find he app eminently usable, so I assume it's possible (I'm not one of them). Since your other access with be gone shortly, would it not be a good idea to install v10 and see what happens? - Please don't contribute to the 'I just installed the app and it doesn't work' nonsense; Evernote takes a while to download a new disk copy of the account and set up all the search indexes. Leave it running on your system for 24 hours before you start testing it. Even after that, newly opened notes take a little time (seconds) to one-off convert to the modern format. The next time you open them, access should be (more or less) instant.
mrkmax 12 Posted February 25 Posted February 25 2 minutes ago, gazumped said: would it not be a good idea to install v10 and see what happens? Absolutely; I should've made that more clear. I'm using the new App now. No luck thus far but will continue to monitor performance. 1
Level 5 PinkElephant 8,996 Posted February 25 Level 5 Posted February 25 Current status, shortly after opening the app. I think it is busy with a background job, otherwise it is idle. Note that the Activity Monitor measures the percentage in % CPU / core. This means 25% CPU is 25% of one core - not of the total CPU capacity. This is my current total (MBP 14", M2 Max). The 3.07% includes the above EN CPU usage (EN 10.76 Mac direct): It will be more after installing it fresh - it needs to download all content, organize it locally, build the search index, etc. We have had situations when CPU use rose a lot later. Usually this is a sign of a database corruption, that leads to a loop, consuming CPU power. It can be corrected by erasing the local database and having a fresh download replace it. 1
