Left Panel - Saved Search Response

I am using Saved Searches with tags to monitor activities (GTD). With all the other trees closed it presents a nice, simple interface. When clicking on one of the Saved Searches, the left panel menus fully expand with a the notebook and tag highlighted. Is the a setting to keep the menus closed?

All the available settings are in the Tools menu, Options. I don't believe this is one of them, though.

I drop the left panel in (I think - it was a while ago!) the View menu,  which leaves it as a thin black panel on that side of the app window.  Hovering over the icons there gives a list of shortcuts/ notebooks etc...  Hadn't seen it popping the panel out again unless that changed recently.
