Inline tags within notes

It would be great to use tags within notes, in addition to the tagging the overall note.  Sometimes I keep long running notes that I maintain over time.  It would be helpful to decorate the notes with tags so that they show up on search with the proper context.

This would also enable using Evernote more in the style of Roam Research or Obsidian.

For example, you could write 'discussed this and that with [[@NameOfPerson]]', and automatically tag the note with a tag for that person.

Inline tags would definitely make me reconsider renewing my subscription. I've had a workaround using page links, which does work ok thanks to the backlinking feature, but it's still not ideal for larger projects.

On the one hand I like the idea of inline tags.  I’ve been trying Bear and it has them, but one thing I don’t like is that I can’t tell at a glance what tags the note has.  If there is a way to view a tag summary for the note, I haven’t found it.  If Evernote adds the ability to use inline tagging and still keeps the tag list in the header, that would be very useful.

It would be Gretel this feature.

I have been analyzing the capacities tool because they have this functionality, it helps a lot when you have a large note and need to find the specific content of a marked tag

This is capacities example to insert inline tag

When inserting a keyword in text (like _NameOfPerson) we can text search for all notes with that keyword
Warning: special characters are ignored in search indexing (except for _)

That's a work-around using keywords instead of tags. The idea here is to create actual tags inline. Currently, tags relate only to a note; the feature request is that tags can exist within text as well.

100% agree. I have been using Roam for the past few months and REALLY like the inline tagging capability. To just type [[ and then the tag options appear as you type---super powerful and helpful.

I would emphasize the importance of inline tagging. @EverNote, what are the developing plans?

EN have a tack record of only very, very rarely commenting on future developments. If internal tagging is vital to you, then you probably chose the wrong tool. If it is something you would like in the future then, until it is developed (or not),  @DTLow's suggestion of adding text, preceded by a special character, works well. In fact ctrl+F finds a much greater selection of special characters - not just the underscore. You could even use an emoji character. So I would just mirror the real tag with something like _tag or $tag. The real tag will find the note and the "text tag" will find the section.

It's also worth pointing out that EN generally works best with short notes joined together with table of contents, tags etc. Most of the functionality to navigate long complex notes simply doesn't exist. e.g internal tagging, internal table of contents etc. That was a design choice made by EN long ago. Personally I try to keep notes short, and if it really does need to be long, use various ctrl+F hacks to find what I want.

+1 for inline tags.  I use the _ workaround but it would be much better if this was a properly supported function.  And yes, better features for navigating long notes in general would be very helpful.  It may have been a design choice in the past, but that can change.  Especially since EN has new owners...

Indeed inline tags would be nice because the _-workaround is not as handy as tags: You have to change the note text when adding a "tag" or to remove it later...

Better features to navigate within long notes might be an other topic: I would see it as "inline URLs" like in HTML (...#<anchor>).
