App Reloading When Switching Back from Other Processes

Recommended Posts

I too have noticed this, very annoying especially when you have spent only a microsecond in the other app (probably to copy or check something small). This is totally possible and I guess something is crashing or the system is putting evernote to the frozen state and its not recovering.

There were more serious problems before, like a complete freezing of the EN app when apps were switched. This was optimized some month ago, leading to what we have today. During this short break EN makes sure everything will work as expected. Probably it could be optimized - if you have a real problem, issue a support ticket.

If on the iPad, a good workaround is to use slide over when you just want to get something done fast in another app.

This not only happens when you switch apps. If you are in a meeting taking notes and you stop for a couple of minutes then when you go to start taking notes again the note refreshes and goes to the top of the note. I have had to stop using Evernote on my iPad for note taking in meetings. This has been an issue for many months and I keep getting told a fix is on its way but there have been several iOS app updates and still it is not fixed.

Thank you for the reply. Interestingly, I thought the cause of this reloading is because of non-downloadable notebooks, and I subscribed to premium only attempting to fix this by enabling the offline mode (although failed xd). From my limited knowledge, I guess the cause could be some synchronization implementation, which Apple's Notes does very well. I hope Evernote tech team can see this and make some improvement. This sabotages the user experience a lot especially for cases like this,

Evernote is well known for its simplicity and easy to use, but if this problem on IOS persists, it is actually better to just use Apple's most basic Notes app.

That is exactly what I do now. In terms of just recording notes then in my view Apple Notes is a much better experience than Evernote. It is also much faster. It meets all my needs with the exception of being able to paste images into notes from the web application as I use Windows at work.

Whenever editing a note there is a timeout in iOS evernote where it forces a refresh and loose cursor position and default to initial view as if you have just opened a note. This is especially annoying with longer notes that require scrolling. Scenario: if you want to take notes walking or in a meeting you cant just pull out your phone to write down information. There is almost always a lot of friction to resume content editing. Its ridiculous. Surely there is a way to sync notes to the server without distracting user from the most important task - content creation

The timeout occurs when switching apps or after a brief phone sleep. Apparently its a normal behaviour confirmed by support. After syncing and crashing this has to be one of the most annoying features in the product that will eventually force me to switch to apple Notes app, which is excellent and free

Evernote really needs to get its product development act together, start listening to customers and stop product fragmentation chaos. I hope the new CEO gets what product development is. There is a lot of competition in the market already!

Not exactly a timeout, but a known limitation

Works for me ( I'm using an iPad).
I prefer the Notability app for note-taking, and save the document in Evernote as an attachment

I am glad I am not the only one having this problem, which I have had for almost a year. I hope Evernote product managers will do something about it. Does anyone know how to code on a feature request? In this case removing and unwanted feature or a limitation.

The Notes app in IOS is actually much better than you think. It now has sharing folders capability and amazing handwriting support and UI. Sadly no tags. Also it’s not cross platform but that’s ok for many people

I have tried notability but it does not same plain text to Evernote. Also it’s a hack that should not exist in the first place

I have experienced this on my iPad and iPhone for about six months and am puzzled why there are not more people complaining. It makes iPad note taking unusable. Maybe people do not take meeting notes on their ipads :-)

When viewing notes on the phone, frequently I switch to other apps to do things like reply message, searching some content of the notes on the internet and so on. However, unlike the built-in Notes app on IOS, Evernote frequently reloads itself and returns to the top of the page and unsaves the action performed before switching to other apps. It very frustrating when the note is very long with lots of tables and we are editing something. It would be so much easier if the app can keep its status in memory much longer so that we can view the same things again after switching back.

Since IOS Notes itself can do it and there is no problem on my Mac, I assume there could be a way of fixing this for IOS? I am using a iPhone 8 for reference.

Thank you very much.

THIS! It bugs me to no end. Especially when I need to bring up notes in a hurry.

I agree that this is a workflow killer even on an iPad. Anytime the ipad sleeps it wipes out any annotation I made. Useless.

Opening a Support Ticket right now.

H-O-L-Y  C-O-W!

I always use Evernote in the store when I shop with my list - but haven’t been in awhile. Obviously, something in Evernote has changed - I think since iOS 13 came out. Today, every time I came back to Evernote (I.e, the phone timed out or I had to my message my wife with questions about the list - always questions!), the app had gone clear back to “All Notes” - making me hunt for my Errands notebook and open my Shopping List Note. EVERY. TIME.

Was not that way in the past.

While waiting for a fix - an alternative to getting the note back is the shortcut star, most recent notes are at the top of the screen.

You should try cooking a recipe with Evernote on iOS or iPadOS. Just when you think you have everything under control the damn thing will refresh the screen mess up your state of culinary flow

I had hopes the latest iOS 13 update would fix or help with this being they state one of the bugs they fixed was apps unloading from memory too quickly. Alas, sigh, no.

Yes, I am having the same trouble. Also, whenever I use the app in SplitView (iPad), the typing becomes extremely laggy.

Yes, I met the similar problem. I often switch between apps while making notes (like safari, email, etc). Whenever I switch back to Evernote, the layout is reset (full screen gone, cursor gone). It's a big problem of user friendliness.

To be fair, I think a big part of this may be on the OS. I switched to the 13.3 public beta. There are still issues, but not quite as bad as 13.2.2 release.

I also agree.  (LOL; probably stated such earlier but memory doesn't work well - hence why I use Evernote  🤣)  iOS 13 is when I think things went down hill.

I'm on 13.2.3 and life is still not good with Evernote.  😪

I am having similar issue in 2020.  I am reviewing a long note; I switch to say send an email for a few minutes, and when I switch back to Evernote, it reloads everything and I have to start my review over and even search anew for the note.  Any ideas?

This issue has been around for a long time now and I no longer use my iPad for Evernote meeting notes because it is unusable. I use Apple notes and then copy across later. The issue should be resolved in the new app if it ever comes but it looks like it has been delayed by quite a bit.

hey guys

I believe several people on this thread, including myself, have raised a ticked last year, but it was never resolved. I have started using Apple Notes as it now has all the basic features and is super friendly. If you could do everyone a favour and submit a ticket with a URL to this thread product managers may re-prioritise this. You can do it quite easily from the app itself. I am not sure if the problem is easily addressable since Evernote is a very much a legacy service with poorly managed fragmented teams. There was a recent backend re-design but I did absolutely nothing for addressing these burning UX problems. I think even the new web version exhibits this behaviour. I have not checked lately though.

It is a known issue from iOS 13 that apps running in the background will sometimes be closed by the OS. Reason seems to be that with all the multitasking stuff the iPad can run short of RAM space. Critical situations occur probably when many apps are open at the same time, especially on iPads with little RAM (worst setup is the Air 2, that runs iOS 13 but was released more than 5 years ago).

Running few apps on a Pro should improve things. But we have no issues on our Air 2, maybe because we run it with only EN open as our shared recipe book while cooking. We often make remarks to existing recipes in that process, and do not have shutdown problems.

Or switch to another app, like Apple Notes.

In my case this would mean to switch to English as well, because some functions are (still) restricted to using the English language when taking notes. So every tool has its own set of surprises.

The problem is much more annoying on iPhone especially when you have a long note open. Try appending to a note quickly when you are on a conference call.. It will drive you insane. I have never seen the problem go away on any of my devices: iPad Pro or iPhone X

This really shouldn't be the case. Apps are frozen in place, occupying no resources but still in last known state when switched to the background. If it was killed perhaps it could resume at the same place, with some clever programming that constantly remembers the last open state.

It is also getting very sluggish and takes a few taps sometime before it responds. It feels like a mobile web site, not an app. I hope that they get this sorted out.

Have you ever killed an app on a PC using the Task Manager, or on a Mac by the equivalent procedure ? This is executed on OS level, not by an interaction with the app. The app is closed the hard way. This is done to prevent the whole device to crash.

It is not true that an open app does not use resources while it is in the background. It does not use much, especially it is low in CPU usage, but RAM reserved because it keeps code and data in there is not available for the OS or other apps. And RAM is what seems to be the critical resource with iOS 13.

I do not say this is nice or should stay as it is, but I doubt there will be an easy fix for it.

The best solution (call it a workaround) is to open as few apps in parallel as possible, and sync your work before switching.

This may all be true but I use Apple Notes, Simplenote and Onenote on my iPad and they do not behave the way Evernote does. However, it does make me realise that Evernote must not be used by people taking notes in meetings on iOS because it is unusable and as such I am sure more people would have complained if they used it in this way.

Totally not true. Modern note apps like Dropbox Paper, Notion, Apple Notes and many others mentioned in the thread do not have this problem. They are multitasking friendly.

Besides, the solution you are proposing does not work anyway. Here I have closed all apps, restarted my iPhone X, opened Evernote with a particular note. A few minutes later I have opened the Evernote app (again). It was still the only app in the background. Video demonstration below. I am guessing you don’t use Evernote in the way many people in this thread do. The spinning wheel sits there longer typically. Also you can’t expect me to close all the apps every time. It’s not how iOS was designed. The last thing I want to do is rearrange my life around an app because it has a software design problem. It would be good if product managers came forward and simply said that it’s either too hard to tune it or just not a priority at the moment because the engineering team is still buried in technical debt.

All my apps are closed except Evernote. I search for something, open it, then switch to home screen. After 5 seconds, I switch back to EN and BAM, I'm back to search string with no search text. I need to type my search in again to find my note.

This is unacceptable that it has not been fixed. I have both my IOS and Evernote on the latest version and it seems that everyone has had this issue for many months. Then you have the nerve to keep asking me to upgrade to a higher cost plan. I've been a customer for years and I'm planning to look for alternatives.

To me now, Evernote is just a storage and searchable structure. I can no longer use it for note taking on mobile, in fact mobile just scrapes in for emergency look up of information. Any real use of Evernote has to be done on the Mac client.

I may use this "down time" to look for how I can achieve the same thing with iCloud Drive folders and tags where I use Evernote for structured storage (filed by Hazel) and move to Apple notes for my dumps of data I just want to be able to search down the track. I have no issue paying for premium but premium should come with zero annoyances.

I am not ready to quit Evernote. I love the platform and put virtually everything into it. But these issues are incredibly frustrating. I have my iPhone set to lock at 30 seconds. If I am in a note in Evernote and it auto-locks, when I open the phone, Evernote has closed, and I have to reopen the app and find the note again.

What kind of sense does this make?

I contacted support and they said they tried to fix it and it caused performances issues. Here is the full response:

I sincerely apologize that we provided you this experience. It is the exact opposite of what we pride ourselves on. We value our customers and understand how important it is to offer you exceptional service.

I can confirm that this is something we are aware of and our development team is investigating. Unfortunately, we've tried to put fixes in place that seemed to have created performance issues, so it turns out to be more challenging to address as we thought.

In all transparency, since the beginning of the year, we've been busy working on revamping major component of the app, including the syncing mechanism, our backend infrastructure, our note editor to only name a few. This work has been the most priority company-wide and has been affecting the priority of other issues. If you'd like to read more about what e're up to, I invite you to read the latest blog post of our CEO Ian Small — Mid-Year Review: Our Progress so Far, and How You Can Help.

it doesn’t say whether the problem will be fixed but we should be excited that they are ignoring the issue for now due to new features!

One way to fix the memory bloat problem of the native iOS app is by deprecating it in favour of the more modern web app, which could also have a webview native shell. We would lose offline mode though. I am speculating that the offline mode is useful mostly for speed optimisation - better UX. Unfortunately, having a bloated native app also causes UX problems.  With the current generation of mobile devices network is no longer a bottleneck. www.notion.so are doing it pretty well. Maybe it's time to poach some of their engineers, while its not too late

I think users should be given choice between the native and the web app experiences on mobile. It's currently not possible. Why not?

I am hoping the new web UI was designed for this use-case. If not, then you have bigger problems to worry about than this UX issue. The CTO has to make the right choices. The CEO has to make hard choices and not pay us the lip service on the podcast. Simply send us an update with new features delivered monthly and delight instead of frustrating us

Hopefully you're being sarcastic here! I can't think what the last new feature was, let alone one that was useful and in support of Evernote's "your knowledge store, everywhere" mission.

Like Zoom has done, Evernote need to pivot immediately to focus on nothing but getting the mobile apps working as well as they used to, you know, how it worked when we all signed up to put our lives' data in to this service.

The current Evernote mobile app is being phased out with the new one. I am encountering this really frustrating issue too and about it refreshing which is really frustrating when using Evernote for email.

My question is then more does the new app which is in beta still have this issue. If so then I think I would need to try another platform, if it doesn’t have this issue I’ll grind it out and wait.

Well..  the forums are read by staff,  but there are over 75,000 threads,  many being added or updated each minute.  I'd imagine ALL of Evernote's current employed staff would be required concentrate exclusively on Forums posts (instead if,  say,  coding...) to stay up to date with the traffic.  Plus more input from staff leads to more questions and objections from users...

So Evernote will not (usually) comment in the Forums on any individual issues.  Developers read the forums to see what ideas we come up with for possible future features,  and we have a few floating admins to keep the crowd in line - but most of the responses here (including mine) are from volunteer users who've been around for a while.

Yeah, the issue is, for the system I have been developing based on the secret weapon Evernote works perfectly. I am also using it for productivity though as a catchment for everything and that’s where there is this issue.  Hopefully it’s resolved, I am willing to wait it out a bit as they do seem to be trying to improve overall stability.

We either need to get this thread so active it shows up on their radar or we all need to submit a support case.

It also seems like they are making huge redesigns to the underlying infrastructure and taking on new software design processes which I’m sure is slowing things down as well.

Well not much point sorting out the underlying infrastructure if there are no customers left. The iOS app is just not fit for purpose in respect of note taking so my guess is that the majority of people use the iOS app to just retrieve notes. Otherwise their iOS customers would have left a long time ago.

Indeed. I am staying for the wrong reasons - too hard to move to something else and no decent alternative (because I exploit quite a lot of Evernote's functionality). In no way because of user delight. Evernote may say that's fine, but without delighting users their future will slowly taper off into the sunset. See my thread on sync sloppiness here also.

Could that be just an excuse for not willingness to change your ways? Is there a sunk cost fallacy involved? No tool is a perfect match for all of your existing mental shortcuts, but we quickly find a way to adapt. I find myself wondering if there is a way to solve the search problem by simply having a better black box search? For instance, would the simplicity of Dropbox's Paper deliver better result? Alternatively, would having the ability to organise your notes in hierarchies instead of flat list yield a better discoverability - Notion?

Evenote lacks 'magical' simplicity. We have to put in the extra effort to organise our notes to improve the search relevancy.

What alternatives have you looked at? Notion and Paper come to mind. What else?

Update: Notion has databases. Dropbox has hashes.

I just wanted to chime in & join the chorus of users who are extremely frustrated with this total lack of multitasking capability in the Evernote iOS app.

This is really ridiculous that it's been outstanding for so long.

Can anyone explain; is this a fundamental incompatibility between iOS 13 and Evernote, or is it the app itself, irrespective of iOS build?
Seems this issue only arose after iOS 13, correct?

If you check Evernote's blogs, they're currently in the process of revising and updating ALL the clients in all OS's although at the moment it's taking them rather longer than they initially thought.  I'd imagine their apparent lack of action on this issue is a basic reluctance to spend money fixing a problem in an app that's about to be replaced,  thereby delaying their new launch by even more...

I’ve been a premium user for years. Now we are moving to a new platform because of the bugs that don’t get fixed. Most notably is the refresh of a note even when your screen turns off. Used to love Evernote. Very sad.

I've also been a premium user since 2013 (&  just registered for this forum today).  I am still rooting for EN to improve.  However, it takes 3~5 seconds for EN to refresh when switching between apps.  Note taking is the primary use for this app and EN's utility for note taking is significantly degraded by this refresh delay.  EN developers may be too busy to read (or grep) through forum posts, but sadly they will take note of their revenue stream drying up.  I recently payed the annual premium, so if it's fixed by June 2021 I'll stay, else I'll likely go.

App refresh when switching between apps for a notebook that is LOCAL to my iOS device should NOT refresh and take me from my spot in the note back to the top of the note after a 3 s delay!!! Come on guys… get this fixed!!!

Why does the iOS app NOT remember state when app switching???? If I have a long note and have a search box open looking for something and it's 3 pages in, why when I switch between apps and then back again does the screen go blank, 3 seconds later the note pops up again at the top of the note? Maddening

And while I'm ranting… DO NOT use Evernote to take notes. Made this mistake with my fancy Apple Pencil at a conference. My iPad screen locked and Evernote refreshed and my notes were all gone. Reproduced this multiple times. It didn't save any of my notes!!! Surely this needs to be fixed.

The short answer:On the iPad use the split screen to avoid switching. The long one: My guess is the app has become too big over time and takes up too much memory. I wonder if it would help actually removing all the local notes as removing that index FROM memory. The problem is not easily fixed. IOS memory management must have changed over time. How would you go about making an app lean when all of the pieces are being used? Rewrite is expensive and time-consuming. As we all know Evernote has accumulated a lot of technical debt over the years due to mismanagement. Instead of removing they kept on adding across all of the platforms to drive sales. That can only go so long. That’s what happens when you have a sales / mba guy running a startup company. It stops being a startup and develops antibodies to innovation. The new CEO seems to get it. Evernote maintained multiple versions of the same thing across all of the platforms. There was and still is feature fragmentation. The engineering team is now paying for it and sales are going down due to competition external innovation. At some point the whole thing could implode, but I really hope it doesn’t. Evernote is an OK family of products that I hope one day becomes an awesome product once again. The native experience is still the key but users are now also demanding a web experience too. Luckily they have fixed the backend six months ago. That was really ageing based on my customer experience. There is a beta program and the fix in the works. I think the fix is somewhere between a preview and a beta

hi folks

I have just tried the new beta v10 on iphone and the loading issue seems to be gone.  I have not used it in anger yet. The beta is buggy but overall its mostly usable. The new editor looks snappier and now has an edit button, which should hopefully completely eliminate sync conflicts. Its looking good.I wish there was vector based drawing capability, but what we have seems to be good enough.

Thanks to the engineering team

You know what... I am so pleased you wrote back with such detail. I am so grateful. You my friend have an inside track!! I am with you… I absolutely do not want to switch!! But oh my gosh I can only take so much.

I seriously hope these bugs get quashed. I cannot tell you how many of my students and residents I have converted to Evernote and I hate to see feature bloat and bugs that don't get fixed for years.

Thanks @bo12 Enjoy your weeknd 🙏

I am glad it helped :) in a unqualified estimate, I think we are still some months away from a public release. The beta is a rewrite of the UI. Having said that anyone can participate in a beta program if you are willing to take the risk of the app crashing and features not working at all

Hi, the beta programme is useless. I am constantly getting emails asking to sign up for the beta programme for the various apps. I sign up and then never hear from them again. I raised this with support and they say they need testers with a large number of notes. I only have just over 1000. However, they know that before they send me the invite email. I have asked them to stop sending me invites if they are going to ignore me but they keep coming and they keep ignoring 😀

Evernote needs a better customer engagement model too. I have about 6k note and assumed that everyone in the program would have been extended an invite

see if this TestFlight link works for you. It may not be individual. I would click this cautiously since there is probably a backend flag that needs to be enabled for the new UI to work on your account

Ping support again I would say. These betas are always limited in numbers because engineers have to support users, which slows down the actual public release
