On my Windows 7 notebook (with certainly not the latest edition of Windows 7) sync does not properly work, this morning a few items were synced but most things did not... It worked properly before though. Restart the  notebook did not help either.

the activity log says

11:46:02 [ERROR  ] [6076] [5768] * error: Could not connect to Evernote server

But the notebook is connected via a LAN cable, music is streaming, websites can be opened, gmail is working properly, just evernote complains... 🙂

Just tried again and here is the complete log:

Any ideas?

just had the idea to check the activity log for today and it worked before (yes, today), so the fault is unlikely to be on my side (I guess)

ok, the problem was with me - one service after another stopped, after evernote the streaming and finally not even websites could be opened - sth wrong with LAN, now with WiFi everything incl. evernote is working/syncing again as it should...

I've been having issues with syncing all day today, especially when trying to attach images to notes.

Just created a basic note, then attached a 504kb PNG image-file (resolution of 896 x 3,306 px) and after doing a manual sync, like 4 minutes later of trying to sync, it comes back with red-exclamation mark...sync failed.  But no error message of any sort.  I then have to delete the whole note, empty trash, and sync again to remove red-exclamation mark, but no joy with adding images... EN useless to me today... anybody else having this?

Also, when doing a manual sync, vs enabling auto syncing... is there a way to force-stop a sync that has started???

I'm on Win 64bit laptop using latest version of EN-for-windows 6.18.4.8489 (308489) Public (CE Build ce-62.3.7750)

copy of support ticket raised****  actually it gets better...I was unable to successfully post ticket as EN support page hung on adding 'activity log' file and appears frozen for the 2nd time! and my internet WiFi speed seems fine...so must be at EN's end...right?

Stop a sync: Depending on your possibilities, you may a) force-quit the client (task manager) b) deactivate the WiFi c) pull out the LAN cord d) pull the plug on the router. EN is quite robust against syncing being interrupted, happens all the time, more on the mobile devices than the desktop ones.

Upload problems in general: If it is your router, or you have access to it, it is often a good idea to pull the cord at the router, making it stop for lack of energy. Better not do this when there is a lot of network traffic, like backups going on. Then wait 10sec, and plug the energy in again.

This will not only clean out the router internally, but will force your internet service provider to reestablish the connection with clean, fresh access-data. Wait until the router setup is through, which may take some minutes.

To watch what I get, I use speed measuring. There are many websites offering this, no need to install locally. Hint: On a fast connection, do not test through the WiFi. Test on a desktop PC / Mac connected directly into the router via LAN-cable.

cheers...yeah i actually unplugged power chord from the router last night before bed...i do that every few weeks, and seems to keep things fresh as you say.  Are you having any issues with adding images to a new or existing note, then successfully syncing???

Not tried ... and I won’t in the next time, as I am on my iPad. There sync works differently, because there is no local database like on the desktops. Test upload of a newly created pdf went lightning fast. Upload of a panorama picture with 13MB as well, maybe a bit slower. Upload of appr. 40MB of several pictures into one note caused significant sync traffic for a few seconds, but went through as well pretty fast.

So I would say, everything o.k. here.

Same problem happens again, everything is working, internet is connected by LAN and the only app not connecting to the internet is evernote.... Another Windows 7 run device attached to the same switch is doing fine for the same account. Something is definitely wrong with Evernote. Here in the company I can not just restart the router all the time, especially if no one else has any problems.

Maybe some sort of security software getting in the way ?

From the log you posted first it is syncing, you just fail sooner or later (?) through timeouts. This can happen when packets send or coming back run through some sort of security inspection. Once connection is lost by timeout, it will not reestablish, because the secure server connection is gone.

There is, at least to my knowledge, no security inspection involved... No security software installed...

What is puzzling me is the repeated error content concerning the internet connection (time out, connection reset etc.).

In a company (as you say, you cannot restart the router all the rime) I would be pretty surprised if there was no security SW running.

Can you get help from your companies IT admin ? Maybe someone just blacklisted EN (maybe by accident, or by some automatic watchdog), a port necessary to connect got closed etc.

Updating server note "Screenshots taken December 23, 2018 a...",

Try exporting this note, then delete it.  Then try a sync.  Maybe something in the note is triggering the issue.

@PinkElephant appreciate your input :-) But we are just loosely connected to the router, restarted, even unplugged it this morning and same problem, definitely no security SW running

@CalS good catch I think, I secured the whole folder and deleted it then in the evernote desktop app, the activity log shows success first with updating the server, it could connect but then has a problem again with this "Screenshots taken December 16, 2018" (previously it was a December 23 screenshot)...

and now again stuck with Dec 2018 screenshots that are deleted already, also on the server using another machine which does not have sync problems...

I do not entirely disagree :-)

Just the only thing that makes a problem is Evernote, else everything is running smooth, fast, absolutely no other problems. I love not to have to update windows all the time whereas ok, my new W10 machine (in another location) is doing all this actually fast but yeah, just because of Evernote?

@RavBoy yes I just read through your problem. but since it one day works and another not - and since one machine (right now) is syncing over the same switch/router/ISP where the other machine does not sync I give it another day now (and yesterday it was the other way round (machine wise) - see how all changes again overnight

When it works this stuff is great..when it doesn't...yikes.  Yeah my issue was EN successfully syncing/or not, depending on file attachment size... however when i change WiFi networks the problem is gone and EN syncs fine, as it should. Good luck

Win 7 is near to be obsolete. If a machine can not be upgraded to Win10, it will not take all sorts of new SW releases, accumulating security gaps etc. And it will lack the horsepower to make those who use it productive. So it is very likely „not just Evernote“.

IMHO replacing that stuff in a professional environment is just a matter of rentability. It is not the new equipment that will cost money, it is the (paid) time spend with the old stuff that is costly. And if you anyhow set something up anew, there are other possibilities like putting in a nice server (or even a good NAS, like the Synology „+“ series), and let everybody work (Office-type stuff) on Mini-PCs / Net-PCs without disks etc. Much cheaper, much better to admin as the classical setup.

@PinkElephant U know for the work I am earning money with I just need sth. like dropbox, evernote, word and excel as well as a browser. Believe me, at home with a brand-new machine I am not any faster doing my work compared to the 9 year old machines in the office. Not any measurable advantage, ok everything opens a bit faster but with enough RAM installed these SW I need works pretty well with a second generation I5 processor...

That is true for many tasks. On office tasks, my MBP is never exceeding 10% CPU. Many computers sold are completely oversized, and many smaller companies often continue to buy larger individual computers instead of investing in a good office network with 1 good server for all the heavy lifting.

This is why I say the investment may be very small for an computer that allows to work on the regular office stuff, but on an actual OS with actual programs. If nested in a decent company network with a sound server behind it, prices can be way below 200€ a piece.
