My explanation to the issue would be that the old mini is running on a 32bit-architecture (not sure about this, but my old iPad was 32bit and could not update any longer). This is why it is frozen to an old iOS version, because newer ones need a 64Bit-processor to work.

When an app is updated to 64Bit-only, it will stop working on the 32bit-machines. Normally one can continue to use old app versions to work around this. But if the server data structure is moved to 64 as well, it may stop.

The Evernote API, if that's what you're referring to by "server data", is strongly typed and is independent of processor size. See http://dev.evernote.com/doc/reference/
