Understanding local files/database for Evernote

Recommended Posts

Hey, are these the local files of EverNote? And I should always backup the Database folder, right?

And suppose I format the PC, I want to import the notes from those files so I checked the import option in EverNote and it asks me to point to .enex files but I only see .exb files there?

Can anyone please clear this for me?

The .exb file is a copy of your Evernote database maintained on your PC
The master version is stored on the Evernote servers

.enex files are exported Evernote data; a common backup method
This is the data you're importing

Backing up the .exb file is an alternate backup method

>>And suppose I format the PC

You can use the backed up .exb file, or let Evernote rebuild the database from the server

It can't built database from server because I have turned sync OFF. I am using EN completely offline.

So, in that regards, I should backup all the .exb files and then if I want to import, I just go to File -> Import -> Then point to the .exb files?

Sorry, I didn't connect to the Local Notebooks discussion.   Of course you have no data on the servers.

I would use the backed up .exb file
It's not an import, but a Windows user will need to advise you on the procedure

edit: I moved the discussion to the Windows forum.

Should I post it in the help section so that a mod or support specialist would see and answer?

This is a mainly user-supported forum,  so you're unlikely to get an employee responding directly to your post.

To answer your main query - as @DTLow confirmed,  all your data is stored in the EXB file.  The other files in the databases folder are things like thumbnails and logs.  To be able to restore your offline notebooks the best option is to copy the existing folder somewhere safe.  To restore your database,  or move it to a new (Windows) device

  1. install a new 'blank' version of Evernote.
  2. you're usually asked to log into the server to verify the install,  so File Exit the app so you're no longer connected.
  3. replace the new, empty Databases folder with a copy of your backup version.
  4. log back in - you're ready to go.  No imports,  no downloads required.
  5. keep your old backup just in case - create new ones regularly...

Nice idea mate :)

Thanks to both @DTLow and @gazumped :)
