We in Canada use the UK -our spellings in colour and honour and the UK -re spellings in kilometre and centre, but the US -ze spellings in optimize and analyze (but we call the letter "zed" not "zee"), and the US spelling tire rather than tyre; we also favour (!) single rather than double consonants: focusing, rather than focussing. Level 5* gazumped 11,665 Posted July 1, 2018 Level 5* Share Posted July 1, 2018 Not sure how you measure levels of difference between different versions of English - it's certainly enough in the UK to make the spell check more or less useless for absolute accuracy, and I'd imagine the same in Canada. I've been adding my version of spellings to the dictionary for a while, so at least my own notes aren't liberally sprinkled with red underlines - but the odd typos now get through when I inadvertently lapse into US-speak. I'm sure there's a translation team somewhere looking at new languages, but I'll grant you they're unlikely to give any great priority to Canadian and 'original' English. Link to comment
Level 5 Dave-in-Decatur 3,959 Posted July 1, 2018 Level 5 Share Posted July 1, 2018 FWIW, we largely owe these distinctions-without-differences to Noah Webster, founder and (occasionally mis-)guiding spirit of what became the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionaries and their offshoots. Webster was a spelling reformer, and campaigned for a distinctive U.S. spelling system. For better or worse, he won, and apparently snuck (is that accepted in any dialect?) some of his influence across our northern border. Link to comment
