Font size changes back to default--Why?

I'm using Evernote for Mac v7.1. In Preferences I have my default font size set to 14 pt.

For some new notes I want to use a font size of 16 pt, which I choose with the Format > Show fonts window. And it works fine if I never stop typing.

But, if I hit return and then pause and then type, the new text reverts to 14 pt, my default size.

Is there any way to fix/prevent this from happening?
