App Becoming Sluggish and Unresponsive

I have really loved using Evernote over the years and have over 5500 notes in it, but this seems to be now causing lots of issues. I have several different macs with Evernote installed on them, but more and more I am finding the software becoming consistency unresponsive and sluggish to do anything. Specifically in recent times I am getting an error about the content not being available and to try again, even though the computer is online. It is getting more and more to the point where I am going to have to find an alternative - I suspect that the issue is that the application data is getting too large for the systems to cope with it properly.
