kewlgoog 0
What is the process to move the evernote db to an external drive on a mac? Evernote is taking up a significant %age of my SSD space and so, one way or other, I need to clear it - either move or delete... Link to comment

Moving the database is not an option on the Mac platform >>Evernote is taking up a significant %age of my SSD space How much space? My database folder is 10gb. Link to comment
R3DDVELVET 1
@DTLow plenty of people have computers with storage limitations now that more expensive SSDs have become the norm. For instance, I have a work laptop (MBP) with only 128GB of storage. I've been happy to use the web/browser version, but there are times when certain functionality isn't available in the browser UI. Clearly the option to locate the EN DB somewhere other than the default HD is desirable and is done frequently by Windows users. I understand that the Mac file architecture makes this more challenging, but doesn't take away from the legitimate need and use-case for many users. That said... I do appreciate the wealth of knowledge you share with others on here. Thank you. Link to comment

R3DDVELVET 1
It's approaching 20GB, which is proportionally too much. But also, don't be that guy. It's easy to get technical and debate people (I'm guilty of it far too often), but not productive. It's a legitimate scenario for many, whether you agree or not. Link to comment

It's a legitimate scenario for many, whether you agree or not. I didn't express an opinion either way. My database storage % isn't "significant" or "proportionally too much", but I recognize the issue. My vote is for both options; database location and selective offline notebooks. I upvoted the feature requests below Link to comment
AndyDent 113
Prompted to look at this by seeing @jjdevenuta comment on another thread. I am about to travel so not inclined to experiment but has anyone tried using a hard link to redirect their Evernote folder? I use them to have some of my iTunes content on my Drobo. There's a good user-level discussion here of aliases vs symbolic links vs hard links.Warning they are broken by APFS, the new file system in macOS High Sierra. See Apple doc and this recent Ask Different thread. I'd also suggest experimenting with symbolic links (they may still work depending on Evernote). So if hard links are the only way to go, your main drive needs to remain HFS+. Use the diskutil terminal command to determine if your drive is HFS+ $ diskutil info / Device Identifier: disk1s2 Device Node: /dev/disk1s2 Whole: No Part of Whole: disk1 Volume Name: MBPHD Mounted: Yes Mount Point: / Partition Type: Apple_HFS File System Personality: Journaled HFS+ Type (Bundle): hfs Name (User Visible): Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Journal: Journal size 40960 KB at offset 0xe8d000 Owners: Enabled Link to comment
productivitator 0
Local install EN user here. I first quit EN and restarted the MBP. Moved my "accounts" folder (~34 GByte) to an external drive. Went in Terminal to the Library folder where accounts resided and entered ln -s <path to the moved accounts folder, e.g. /Volumes/SSD07/EN/accounts/> accounts which creates the symlink. Started EN, there was a dialogue window showing up very shortly telling that some user data gets migrated (?). EN is fully functional and I saved some 30+ GByte on the local drive Link to comment
abdc 1
Does this work on the current versions of Evernote for Mac? Link to comment
Level 5 PinkElephant 8,791 Posted July 18, 2022 Level 5 Share Posted July 18, 2022 You can try through a symlink, which is what was described above. It is not official, use it at your own risk. Link to comment
captproton 0
symlink worked for me today. Link to comment
