Extremely buggy

Recommended Posts

I have been using Evernote for years, but all of a sudden the integrity of the program appears to be in serious doubt as I keep coming across very odd and disturbing data problems. Just two examples of many - today a portion of a note I wrote appeared on a completely unrelated note (which i was lucky to discover by accident). I also have notes wherein the Context menu appears smack in the middle of a note on the desktop app, but displays correctly on all my other devices.

Is anyone else experiencing new and highly problematic bugs? I thought Evernote was committed to fixing all the serious issues, but it appears problems are just getting worse. I am a devoted user and have no desire to switch to another program, but may have to in order to be assured that my data is safe and accurate. It's a disaster to even think that my data is not preserved accurately.

If you wish to report a bug with Evernote, it's really helpful to state which Evernote product you're using, the operating system, version, etc. Otherwise, everyone is just left to guess...

Good point. I am using Windows 10, Evernote desktop latest version. However, the mobile IOS app is terrible too - takes about 5 seconds or more to load the new note entry screen, and then another few seconds to give the user keyboard control.

I've got a new iphone 6plus, installed EN from the app store, crashes on launch.  Uninstalled dozens of times, had Apple reset the phone, nothing.  Went to the twitter feed where the help tech are supposed to be active, they are not, nothing there.  Submitting a ticket, nothing.  Just twisting in circles, migration off EN is the only solution for me.  Adios EN.

I agree that the preservation of my notes is of top importance.

You might consider implementing data backups to ensure you can recover data errors.

I have personal backups, and I make use of Evernote's Note History feature

The data loss gremlins exist everywhere including your fingers and computer

i have not seen an increase in new or highly problematic bugs on the Windows platform, my use case anyway.  FWIW.

It's much more useful to report bugs in separate clients in the appropriate sub-forums (usually the Product Feedback subforums). As it is, I've not seen any problems with the Windows client recently. I don't use iOS, myself.

I use Evernote every day - morning, noon, and night. The Windows version 6.4.2.3788 (303788) Public has been working fine for me. I do not touch the beta updates.  And I usually wait 2 to 4 weeks before accepting General Release versions.

I agree.

EN 8.1 crashes on launch on a new iPhone 6 plus.  Everything possible has been tried to no avail.  And no help from EN support or @evernotehelps.  I've started migrating off the program, sadly.  But I have no choice. After a week and endless hours I know now this is a dead end street. It sure was love while it lasted.

The last release of Evernote basically does not work, if you are on iPad:

- notebooks set for offline download ... don't .... download.

- notes you input on the ipad don't save.

- when I perform a function: select a note, select a notebook, and more.... it takes 6-15 seconds to complete and about 40% of the time, I just get, e.g. "Error Loading Note  request timed out."

For nostalgia I went back to Jason Kincaid's blog post on how buggy the 2013 release was and then Phil Lubin (founder/ceo, now left ) response, about how they were going to focus on software quality and better releases. Well, this is is the worst release yet.

I am going to seriously look at exporting my data and looking at other solutions.

Let us know the other solution you find ; I've not found a better solution to storing my data

I'm also not upgrading my work iPad to v8 until the issues are resolved

My experience has been that Evernote has gone completely off the rails, and things are only getting worse, over the last 18 months. It is far less reliable on Windows 10 in my experience. I use it across multiple Windows PCs and an Android phone.

Within the last year I have found that once I have started Evernote it appears that some component related to clipping and overriding the internal Copy Paste Windows functionality is running in the background as a sort of TSR (terminate and stay resident in the old days) because when I am in other apps and use Ctrl+C (Windows Copy) and Ctrl+P (Windows Paste) to grab some text Evernote begins taking unwanted actions. Whatever text I have highlighted in Word or the Chrome Browser suddenly becomes the Name of a new Note that appears in Evernote. And Evernote, even though not the current app in use, will pop up a dialog about having an error!

How can I disable the "feature" in Evernote that is improperly creating new notes and interfering with the proper operation of several of my other stable and otherwise reliable core applications?

The Evernote screen clipper has been around for a long time, implemented as a background process. I find it quite handy.  What you report shouldn't happen (I've never seen any behavior like that), but the shortcut keys that it uses are configurable by right-clicking on the Evernote icon in the Windows notification area, and selecting Options / Configure Shortcut Keys. You can see if there are any conflicts with Ctrl+C and Ctrl+P (?? Windows Paste is Ctrl+V, did you mean that?)

You're right, I meant Ctrl+V to Paste.

With Evernote open if I go (on my Windows 10 Alienware Laptop) into something like a document and do Ctrl+C on some text or a URL it does not end up on the clipboard and I get a fleeting error message about a failure of Evernote to do something. I haven't been able to capture the error message. When I go look at Evernote I see that there is a new Note and the Name of the Note is whatever text I had selected.

I also get a pop-up that I haven't been able to capture saying something about a fail in Evernote. Multiple Ctrl+Cs will create multiple instanced of the same note appearing in Evernote. If I can figure out how to capture the error message that is fleeting I will try to post it here.

Thanks for responding.

As I said, you should check the Evernote shortcut key configuration to see if that's conflicting. Also, if you use any keyboard macro applications like AutoHotKey, thise should be checked as well. Evernote shouldn't interfere with clipboard functionality in other programs, and I doubt strongly the notion that it does.
