I want to start doing an EN backup, and whats the best way to back it up? ENEX, html, archive etc.

I have personal backups for my notes and I use both the enex and html formats

You already have stages of backup just by using Evernote
- the master version of your notes is stored on the servers
- the data is replicated to your devices
- Evernote has a Note History backup (paid feature)

Note that Local Notebooks are not synced to the Evernote servers, there is no backup
- everyone should have backups in place for local notebooks
- I use an export, scheduled weekly, one file for each notebook, enex format
  I only keep one copy

You have to decide the use for your backup

  • to reload my database
    - just reload from the Evernote servers
Warning: the reload doesn't include Local Notebooks
  • to reload a single note, or content from a single note
    - I use the Note History feature
    - I also have my personal backups
exported daily, in html format for changed notes
  • to continue viewing my notes if there is an Evernote failure
    - the ENEX format is not easily viewable
    - I have my personal backups
exported daily, in html format for changed notes

There's more information in these discussions

If your purpose is local notebook backups and the recovery of accidentally deleted notes, I would say ENEX.  Backups by notebook making sure tags is checked in options.

I don't have any local notebooks, so I mean synced. Just as a backup incase EN goes down.

Yeah, still ENEX in my view.  I worry less about EN servers crashing and destroying my data then me having a dumb a$$ attack and deleting some notes.  Either way, backups are good.  :)

Be aware that the ENEX format is used for importing into Evernote

Its not a good format for viewing your notes if Evernote is down

I should have also mentioned that batch import is only available on the Windows/Mac platforms - if your Windows/Mac Evernote won't run, the ENEX backup won't be useful

The short answer is:  ENEX
It is designed for backup (export actually) and recovery (import actually).

This has been discussed often.  For more info See Evernote Backup and Restore Options

Okay, thanks. What do tools such as OneNote use to import? I'm not planning to move over, but I want to be able to move over to another tool just in case.

Both OneNote and Apple Notes use the .enex format to import Evernote data.
