New iOS editor very slow?

iPhone 6plus 64 GB, just updated iOS recently as well as app. Honestly, the new version fixed all of my terrible performance problems once the app is running. There is still a delay when opening the app, but what it seems is happening is that the app is syncing before it lets you edit notes to reduce the chance of conflicting changes. I don't always sync before I close the app and open up on my desktop and I used to always run into conflicting edits to notes and with the new app that's no longer an issue going from desktop to phone since it always syncs before edits. Yes, this update took way too long but I can honestly say it was a huge step in the right direction for performance. App is way more stable and responsive after the initial sync

Yes this is happening to me to.  Happens only on my IOS devices.  I used to prefer using the IOS app over the desktop.  But for me, now the desktop app is much faster.

Every keystroke is a 5-10 second delay.  My IOS devices are new IPad Air2 and iPhone 7.  My iMac is 6-7years old and English the EN app runs faster.  I've been using Evernote for 8 years and this is causing to consider switching.  OneNote is interesting to me.

Help us EN!

I upgraded to IOS 10.3 and EN is responsive again on my phone, will check out the iPad later.

Only one slow down when I was saving a note I had just created on my phone.  But no lags at all when using saved searches or shortcuts or tag searches or note scrolling.  I did not do anything with EN, still on 8.1.352228.  Interesting.

UPDATE:  A couple of other slow downs, once right after deleting a note.  Still, overall, faster and less lags than before.

I ended up deleting the Evernote app, downloaded and reinstalled it again and it's working better.  It's not as fast as it used to be, but the reinstalled app is better.

I have also installed Microsoft's OneNote and it seems to run well.  I actually like it because of the sectional tabs.  But the desktop version decided to stop syncing.  Ironically, Dropbox announced "Dropbox Paper" today, which may have some features geared towards keeping notes synced across devices.

Evernote has (or had) a good thing going but I'm thankful I didn't invest in a full paid account.  I was about to because I have an additional laptop, but because of this, it'll be a while  before I would consider paying for this service.

Definately delete the app, reinstall it and log into your account to re-sync your notes.  It will likely improve its performance enough to use it while we all wait for an update and fixes.

Relax...

Thanks for the steps

I've followed them exactly - no lag at all

My iPad Air 2 is very slow and I have tried re-installing to no avail. But my iPhone 4 is almost too slow to use and I have updated to the latest version 8.03 in the hope this might have improved! Not only is it slow but it freezes. This has been re-installed too.

This should have been sorted out before release.

Evernote was the best thing around. Is there anyway getting version 7 back?

I've been an avid Evernote user since 2008 and had Evernote Pro subscription for the past few years. I've been patient with the whole increase in cost given the superior offerings however this iOS lag issue is the last straw. Creating and editing a note is excruciatingly slow.  I too am looking at alternatives even though I'm not a big fan of Microsoft solutions. Google Keep works really well but I can't export Evernote content to that.  Anybody out there completely make the switch?

Evernote v 8.1.352228

iOS v 10.2.1

I really think it os great software, but Evernote for iOs 10.3  have some speed issues at the moment. We just need to give some good feedback for them to fix it

I depend om EN on all the work / life I do... I love the way it enables me everyday. I have tried alternatives that look more fancy and simpler (OneNote and Notes for iOS) but Evernote is superior in it's abillity to file stuff, find it and work with stuff in a fast and effecient way. It can be much improved and is "behind" on several fronts, but the core functionalities are superior.

What I tried...

I have re-installed evernote on my iPad, but the issues remain. I think it is related  to networking / sync that seems to delay the app and make it temporarily unresponsive.

The editing section still needs a lot of attention. All of my ios devices freeze occasionally  after text selection. Often have to wait 15-30 seconds for EN to become respnsive so I can format the various size notes.

I think I can reproduce easily

create a notebook and put many notes in that one note.. it is about 2000 in my case (i have totally more than 10k notes)

and create new note and start typing

evernote will try to upload modified note to server... then typing may be damn slow

I have the same problem - especially on iPad - less so on iphone

whenever switch away from Evernote then return - the first note or ability to do any action takes AGES.

Once in Evernote subsequent notes are ok.  But if switch away again lag problem returns for first action

makes Evernote unusable as it's supposed to be for quick note taking and the up to 10 second pause is a killer

Evernote is still slow. However, despite its slowness, other alternative software have much bigger problems. In my previous post, I mentioned Together and Yojimbo as possible alternatives. I have tried both products: Together (by Reinvented Software) and Yojimbo (by Bare Bones Software). My verdict is that Evernote is much superior despite its slowness. (I have also tried Microsoft OneNote, but personally I do not like its design and the way it organize its notes. Besides, web clipping feature is not so good to satisfy my needs.)

I was hoping first that Yojimbo could be a decent alternative, but the big deal breaker is that I cannot make notes on my iOS devices and only on Mac. It is syncing in only one direction, from Mac to iPad/iPhone.

Together is very buggy. I have really tried it in a few days, and it often crashes. Many of its promising features, like saving web pages as pdf or web archive, do not work as it should. It can also be slow, and I have also experienced that the content of a note can suddenly disappear while reading it! Syncing can also be buggy.

So I think I will stick to Evernote despite its slowness from time to time. I hope that the problem will be solved in a near future.

Best regards,
Aleksandar

UPDATE.  I uninstalled and reinstalled Evernote 8 on my IPad Air 2.  This took care of the slow lag problem for me.  This morning Evernote updated, so not sure what they did, but I had no problems working with it this morning.  Thanks for the suggestions my Evernote buddies, and Evernote, thanks to you if you helped with the update this morning.....

Let us know how it goes, another data point in any case

Sure enough, I'm also seeing a noticeable performance increase with the upgrade to IOS 10.3 and I did "not" reinstall Evernote, just did the OS update.

My app was very slow on my iPad, deleting and reinstalling fixed it.

I tried this too, running iPad Pro, iOS 10.2.1, I deleted Evernote, closed all apps, restarted my iPad, and reinstalled Evernote 8.0.2.351745.

I let it fully sync (working / downloading spinner at top left stopped spinning) and then tried it.

Initially, pages of notes i'd never loaded on the new install were slow to load (i mostly have handwritten notes, which are all images in evernote and lots of snapshots of whiteboards and projector images too). But as i reloaded notes having loaded them once, they popped back on the screen without the same lag i had before. It matches the zippiness that my iPhone SE was already displaying notes with, and is probably at the speed i'd come to expect images/notes to display in Evernote in Version 7.

There are certainly still things that can be improved in this version, but the delete, restart, reinstall improved lag-time performance for me. Give this a try.

Okay, I feel relieved that the problem also happens in newer machines. I was thinking that it might have been because of my (relatively old) iPad (2013).

Dear Evernote team, we understand that you may need time to think about how to solve this issue and improve user experience. We trust you.

However, could you do that after first reverting back to the previous version (well in fact for me v7 was slow too) -- or perhaps providing some direct links for users to download older versions if that's at all possible?

Seems that different people are seeing different effects from the latest iOS update. I'm sure Evernote tested and retested the update. But my experience with software development tells me that "stuff happens" - stuff that is totally outside of what can be tested for. For example, Evernote is slow on my iPad, but fast on my iPhone. And slow on your iPhone, Gallagher.

So that kind of variability means a fix will take a while. Longer than the 3 days that Shaun evidently expects. This isn't caused by a typo in the programming code, it's a lot more complex. It's important to make these things known, with as much detail as you can provide. if you hang in there a while, a fix will come along. If you can't, well good luck elsewhere.

Something to think about: about 6 months ago, I thought Apple notes would be better than Evernote. Apple notes was working just great when I had 50 or 60 notes, but when I imported about 2000 notes from Evernote, Apple notes slowed down to unusable. And then I was glad I kept my evernote account.  So I'm going to hang in with evernote for awhile. I'm pretty sure they'll have some suggestions.

Dear all,

I am a heavy user of Evernote (MacBook, Windows (work) PC and Iphone and was quite worried when the new Iphone release was launched. Problems: very slow response or even non responding, when turning the Iphone from landscape to portrait notes were lost and notes entered when not connected to internet also were lost.

Resolution: remove and re-install the app on your Iphone and everything works again, I am :Dagain

After upgrading to 8.2.3xxxx I still see lag.

Description: Today I was typing in a note and suddenly evernote stops responding while it sync's and I can resume typing after 4-6 seconds when the sync is done. I am on a 60/60 Mbit fiber line and iPad Pro, so performance should not be a problem.

I had no editing slowness with 8.0 or 8.0.1 but then with 8.0.2, wham, it slowed to a crawl.  Before going through the uninstall reinstall dance I just did a full power down of my phone and at least for now that seems to have worked.

I agree, seems to be persistent and slow. After Evernote and iOS update, Evernote is super slow when the app is opened. Takes a good 10 seconds to be able to tap and get a response. Especially painful if one is on a call, in a meeting and need to access a note.  Is it network related? Why is Evernote insisting on going back to network if I have 'use while disconnected'.  The delay is really cumbersome and makes the app not usable as designed.

The update for the IPAD is the worst I've ever seen. I am also having the lagging issues. Every time I try to enter a note, I'm keep getting unable to sync message. Notes are stuck and won't synchronize, slow response, too many issues. My productivity has taken a huge hit and I'm now considering another program to switch.

My notes are taking HOURS to sync with my iPad mini - and it is a pain - it is disruptive to working meetings - please someone fix this update

Just curious did you also reinstall EN, or just update the OS?  My large offline notebook finally downloaded after several weeks so would like to avoid that again if possible.

Is anyone else having trouble with the note editor using the new version? Editing plain text with simplified formatting is excruciating -- after each keypress is about 750 milliseconds of dead time before a response.

I don't see any posts about this -- is it just me?

There are other posts, but I'm not having problems

Dear Evernote,

Don't you think it's about time to start communicating that you;

- acknowledge the fact that the IOS iphone app is not performing as expected

- inform what your plans are to fix this (what, how and when)

For me it would work if the old version would be available, that worked very well (fast, responsive, doing what an Iphone app should do).

I am a very heavy user (MacBookPro, WindowsPC and Iphone), the moments you use the Iphone app is when you want to;

- quickly check a note

- quickly add a new note (in order to enhance / complete it on the laptop/PC later on)

- quickly change some minor things when you are on the move (reminder date, small remark etc.)

The way the current app is performing stops me doing just that :-(

Please be aware that most of the Evernote users are organized and structured people who have tried quite some solutions out there.

The reason why I (and I think most users) did not switch is that Evernote is a super tool as it's working on IOS, Windows, mobile devices and and on a functional level well thought through.

..... take these loyal users on board and communicate your plans to them..... don't make them run away, that would be a pity.

Regards,

Patrick

This new version is very, very slow ! I'm using a iPad Pro with 250 G of memory. When I open Evernote it takes a few seconds before I can open a note, scroll down notes or search for a specific notes. Even if I try to open a new note for editing from inside Evernote or from the To Day widget, it takes a few seconds to respond. Really annoying!

Please, tell us what is happening !!!!

Thanks.

Left EN as it was, no reinstall, which is why I find it most interesting that performance improved so dramatically with just the IOS update.  For me anyway.

The iPad is also much quicker,  Both iDevices open right away now, which they did not previously.  There are still some pauses, typically after editing a note, but NOT nearly as bad as it was before.  I only have two notebooks set for offline, Inbox which is typically empty and Quick (a place for notes I want to be sure and have if I am without a connection) which only has 3 notes in it at the moment.  So not much of an offline notebook test, before or after.

So I closed EN on my phone, moved 5 notes comprising about 200 MB into Quick, opened EN on my phone and in less than 30 seconds the green line was gone and Quick showed 8 notes.  Accessed a PDF in one of the notes and it displayed immediately.  That is much faster than I have seen in the past.  50MB wifi connection.

I will keep using as normal and see if the performance sticks.  YMMV.
