I'm trying to be open-minded about the New Evernote. The new layout is a lot cleaner and more visually appealing, but in terms of efficiency, it is a step backward.
On a large computer monitor, you have lots of room for multiple columns, and there's no need to hide everything behind tiny icons that require multiple clicks to get where you want to go. I never thought things (like other notes, favorites, notebooks) were distracting in the sidebar, but I did find them useful if I had to refer back to a different note while writing one. The best thing about the old layout was how almost everything was available in a single click and lots of notes could be previewed at one time. In a similar vein, one of the best features about the new layout is a bigger editing toolbar (so there is a visible button for a hyperlink instead of having it hidden in a submenu). So my point is, more is better! Draw people in with simplicity if you must, but don't completely drop features! Give us the option to have a more fully featured layout if we want it.
