Such a cavalier approach to security Evernote is using cannot be tolerated anymore. I really like Evernote, but a service's security should be commensurate with the amount of personal data stored. I store more personal date in Evernote than in any other service, yet Evernote has the worst security. I just renewed my premium subscription. If by the next time I am due to renew my account is protected only with a password, I am probably not going to renew.

Has anyone worked out a more efficient system? I'm considering purchasing a Kindle if need be but was open to any thoughts.
I can't recommend Kindle enough. I use it often and highlight a lot. It saves highlights into a simple txt file (myclippings.txt) and from time to time I just upload the txt.file to http://clippingsconverter.com/ and transfer all highlights to Evernote in a matter of seconds. Amazon allows users to easily convert pdf files into Kindle format - just email files to your Kindle address and get them converted and sent directly to your Kindle. Huh, they even have a Chrome extension similar to Evernote Clearly that allow you to send any webpage to Kindle......

Regarding the performance, I have no issues on three years old and underpowered Acer 1410 as well as as Galaxy Nexus.
I am attaching a screen shot just to illustrate how nice is to have articles in Evernote (tagging, preview, comments, links to related papers...).

Having all pdf files in Evernote offers countless benefits, e.g.
- you can link related articles
- you can search for say "Jon Doe (2010)" to get all articles that reference it
- scanned (non text) articles become searchable
- you can tag articles
- you can write comments next to pdf files
- you can put related Excel of Word file next to a pdf files
- all changes made to pdf files (e.g. highlightings) get automatically synced
I currently have over 1000 papers and about 200 ebooks in my Evernote database. Searching is fast as ever and my database is 2.3 GB
Regarding import, it is a matter of seconds on Widnows - just set up the import folder and copy all pdf files in it (Tools/Import Folders).

As far as I know, this is due to the limitations in Android OS (and iOS too) so I am not holding my breath on seeing this feature implemented.

I have switched from Onenote to Evenote because of Evernote's superb syncing, web client, chrome extension, screen cliping, Android client, tagging etc. I really never looked back and I certainly would not like to see Evenote turning into Onenote... Guess Evernote will never be strong in text processing nor Onenote will have Android client, seamless syncing......

#68025 Feature request: reference notes created from PDF files

1. Open a pdf file with any viewer
2. Select some text you wont to have as a note in EN
3. Use ctrl+A to create a note from selection
4. a note is nicely created (i.e. selected text is copied to a new note)
Now imagine, for example, I create 200 notes from 100 pdf ebooks. How to figure out from which ebook a particular note came? It is impossible until I manually make reference in notes. So EN is very efficient in note creation but that efficiency is ruined by lack of any kind of referencing.
The situation is much better in the case of web clips and MS Word documents. EN made a reference for web clips (souce url). Also, if you create a note (by copying selection, ctrl +A) from MS Word, EN makes a reference to source URL (see screen clip) so source MS Word file name is captured which is excellent.
I would be delighted if source URL of PDF files were captured like in the case of MS Word files. Hope it can be done by EN. It would be great to have some metadata from source PDF files in notes, but guess you are right that it is up to PDF viewers not EN.
