#192543 Password Reset Discussion Thread

Posted amer on 02 March 2013 - 11:23 PM

Such a cavalier approach to security Evernote is using cannot be tolerated anymore. I really like Evernote, but a service's security should be commensurate with the amount of personal data stored. I store more personal date in Evernote than in any other service, yet Evernote has the worst security. I just renewed my premium subscription. If by the next time I am due to renew my account is protected only with a password, I am probably not going to renew.

Has anyone worked out a more efficient system? I'm considering purchasing a Kindle if need be but was open to any thoughts.

I can't recommend Kindle enough. I use it often and highlight a lot. It saves highlights into a simple txt file (myclippings.txt) and from time to time I just upload the txt.file to http://clippingsconverter.com/ and transfer all highlights to Evernote in a matter of seconds. Amazon allows users to easily convert pdf files into Kindle format - just email files to your Kindle address and get them converted and sent directly to your Kindle. Huh, they even have a Chrome extension similar to Evernote Clearly that allow you to send any webpage to Kindle......

I use http://clippingsconverter.com/ . It nicely converts Kindle clippings into notes and post them to Evernote. So say you have multiple clippings from five documents. The converter will nicely convert clippings into five Evernote notes, nicely title and post them. I find the service to be truly excellent, and it is free. Unfortunately you still have to manually upload myclippings.txt to the converter, but given the limitations imposed by Kindle this is as good as it gets.

#159202 Organizing PDF library with Evernote

I was also concerned that EN performance would deteriorate due to a large number of pdf files and I am glad that has not been the case. I have about 1200 paper x 30 pages on average + 200 books x 300 pages = 96,000 pages. And as I noted previosly, my database is about 2,3 GB. So I do not think so that the database size would be an issue for regular pdf files. Pdf files with scanned pages are another matter as they can be large.

Regarding the performance, I have no issues on three years old and underpowered Acer 1410 as well as as Galaxy Nexus.

I am attaching a screen shot just to illustrate how nice is to have articles in Evernote (tagging, preview, comments, links to related papers...).

I put all my pdf files in Evernote. It works really well and in my opinion is only way to do it if you deal with hundreds of pdf files. When adding papers to Evernote import folder I put article title, first author, journal abbreviation and year in the file name and it automatically appears in the note title. This helps to easily find articles without tagging, e.g. searching intitle:jof intitle:2010 returns all Journal of Finance articles published in 2010... Searching for intitle:author returns articles written by author etc.

Having all pdf files in Evernote offers countless benefits, e.g.
- you can link related articles
- you can search for say "Jon Doe (2010)" to get all articles that reference it
- scanned (non text) articles become searchable
- you can tag articles
- you can write comments next to pdf files
- you can put related Excel of Word file next to a pdf files
- all changes made to pdf files (e.g. highlightings) get automatically synced

I currently have over 1000 papers and about 200 ebooks in my Evernote database. Searching is fast as ever and my database is 2.3 GB

Regarding import, it is a matter of seconds on Widnows - just set up the import folder and copy all pdf files in it (Tools/Import Folders).

#151529 Cannot edit documents attached to notes

Posted amer on 30 July 2012 - 12:02 PM

It would be brilliant if Evernote on Android could handle attachments as on Windows. I have hundreds on PDF articles in my Evernote database and I regularly edit them. It really works like a charm in the  Windows client - you just open a pdf, edit it, save it and changes get synced. Lack of this feature in the Adroid client makes Evernote almost useless for a serious use for me. And this is the main reason preventing me to get an Android tablet (or iPad).

As far as I know, this is due to the limitations in Android OS (and iOS too) so I am not holding my breath on seeing this feature implemented.

#114026 Evernote is worst **** ever; Waste of time

Posted amer on 08 December 2011 - 01:35 PM

Although both programs have "note" in their names comparing Onenote to Evernote does not make much sense. In mu opinion they are as different as MS Word, which has a calculator and Excel, which can be used for text processing as well.

I have switched from Onenote to Evenote because of Evernote's superb syncing, web client, chrome extension, screen cliping, Android client, tagging etc. I really never looked back and I certainly  would not like to see Evenote turning into Onenote... Guess Evernote will never be strong in text processing nor Onenote will have Android client, seamless syncing......

#111854 Two step authentication (e.g. via Google authenticator) and encryption

Posted amer on 23 November 2011 - 08:58 PM

I freaked out today when I saw that my Gmail account was accessed from the United States while I was nowhere close to the US.... I immediately changed passwords and turned on 2-step verification for my Google and Lastpass accounts.... I now fell than my Evernote account is less secured than it should be. And it is not a nice felling. Please implement 2-step verification through Google Authenticator of something similar. Thanks

Also, it would be great to have a drop down menu with saved searches in the favorites bar (or directly implemented in the search bar as in the web client)

I would like to see search box similar to the search box in the Android client. When entering search term in drop down menu should appear tags, saved searches, search intitle etc

#68025 Feature request: reference notes created from PDF files

Posted amer on 30 November 2010 - 03:36 PM

The scenario is:
1. Open a pdf file with any viewer
2. Select some text you wont to have as a note in EN
3. Use ctrl+A to create a note from selection
4. a note is nicely created (i.e. selected text is copied to a new note)

Now imagine, for example, I create 200 notes from 100 pdf ebooks. How to figure out from which ebook a particular note came? It is impossible until I manually  make reference in notes. So EN is very efficient in note creation but that efficiency is ruined by lack of any kind of referencing.

The situation is much better in the case of web clips and MS Word documents. EN made a reference for web clips (souce url). Also, if you create a note (by copying selection, ctrl +A) from MS Word, EN makes a reference to source URL (see screen clip) so source MS Word file name is captured which is excellent.
MSword_reference.JPG
I would be delighted if source URL of PDF files were captured like in the case of MS Word files. Hope it can be done by EN. It would be great to have some metadata from source PDF files in notes, but guess you are right that it is up to PDF viewers not EN.
