Why is Evernote Atlas So Inaccurate?

Recommended Posts

Well this will depend a great deal on the quality of the location data available to it. For example, if you are on a wifi equipped laptop, the location data will be rather imprecise at the best of times. Likewise with a mobile device equipped with GPS. The quality of this GPS will determine the quality of location data. In many cases it can take a while for your mobile device's GPS system to get a hold of where you are located, in the meantime, it could have you "located" in some very strange places, for example based on the cellular tower you are connected to, or something even more odd than that. If Evernote happens to grab your location within that first 10-15 seconds or so where your location is wildly inaccurate, well... the location of the note will be pretty wonky too!

That being said, being located on entirely different continents is pretty wonky...

What device are you making these notes on? It is the device on which the note is created that the location data is captured NOT the device you are viewing on.

An Android phone and a Windows laptop.

Ok, have you noticed on either of these devices, when using some other GPS enabled application, that it tends to take a little while for it to locate you? Either that your dot doesn't appear for a while, or it appears immediately but jumps around?

Do you have location services enabled (GPS Specifically) on your Android device?

You may just consider submitting a support ticket to bring this to the attention of Evernote staff. They may also have suggestions too.

EDIT: ADDITIONALLY:

I have not ever noticed this issue myself, though I using different devices. most of the time it pinpoints my location pretty well, mostly within a few meters, at worst, a few hundred. On rare occasions I think it places me at the location of a wifi source or a cellular tower, never on another continent though!

Hi,

One explanation for this behaviour is that Evernote reads the GPS information attached to the images inside the notes.

So if you clip from the web a page that has an image with GPS attached to it, that note will get the image GPS location.

Even if you change the GPS location of the note Evernote will override it with the one of the Image.

I think this is a cool feature, but like anything cannot work in all the scenarios. But I agree it is surprising if it's a photo that was not taken by you.

If Evernote is picking up GPS info from the images, that makes sense.  As it operates, it's a worthless feature for me so I have selected the option not to display the location in the side panel.

Thanks.

On my phone I enable GPS  on an as-needed basis, for example, when using Google Maps.  To have GPS on all the time uses too much battery power.  When I turn GPS on it's always pretty accurate, usually showing me to me within a few blocks of where I am if not my exact location.  It's never shown me to be in a different state or country.

Thanks.
