Using Evernote as a Worksheet

I homeschool my three kids and think it would be nice to be able to import/scan in worksheets and have the do the actual worksheet on the screen. Is that possible? Is it similar to marking up a PDF? TIA

Yes, you could do this. Skitch would open the worksheet and the student would be able to use it to indicate answers. 

 

Since worksheets having varying copyrights you'd want to consider that issue in deciding whether you could scan sheets fairly or not. This is always a puzzling issue for classroom teachers and home school parents.

I understand the issue with copyright laws. Most of what I purchase doesn't come from books or I make it myself, so that might not be an issue.

Does Evernote allow for handwriting recognition?

Hi.

The Android version of Evernote now has Handwriting recognition, so if you are using a droid tablet, it should work fine. There are other options available through Evernote's App Centre you may want to look through. I've seen the "Collection" as they call different categories, and I know there's one for Handwriting and Drawing.

I don't have a use for this ability though, so have not personally looked at that Collection of apps to see which are free versus paid, and what clients (platforms - Windows, Ipads, Mac, etc.) each is available on. I suggest you have a look through *all* of the apps available at the Evernote App Centre to see what that might be of use to you, and which would work with whatever client(s) you are using.

NOTE: As I don't know how much experience you have with Evernote, it might seem like I'm stating the obvious here, but I'm just trying to help.

Also, you may want to look at Christopher Mayo's - a.k.a. Grumpy Monkey - website. He has a lot of really helpful general and education Evernote related templates, how-to tips (articles, videos & screenshots) that you may find useful. Though the educational related material is geared for post-secondary students, I've seen several items you could probably adapt for your needs. You could Google "Christopher Mayo" or just find a post here on the forum boards by Grumpy Monkey - who is also a forum moderator so there are lots of posts from him in many different threads and boards, so easy to find one - and click on the appropriate link in the Signature area of one.

And, as a last point, I ran a quick Google search for "Free Templates and Resources for Homeschooling" and came across the below linked page that lists, complete with links to, several sites with free material that might be helpful.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm afraid my templates might not be of much use in this case, because it sounds as if the OP is not creating the worksheets, but wants to scan in / import a PDF and have the students work on it directly. Here are the templates, though, just in case.

Evernote is probably not especially useful for this particular task, and Penultimate does not allow for the import of PDFs. HOWEVER, if you are employing tablets, there is a very nice workaround. Simply move the PDFs into any number of handwriting apps and have the students email / "open in" (iPad) the PDFs within their Evernote accounts (or wherever you want the PDFs to end up in Evernote). There is truly nothing to it, and I regularly do this with materials for my classes. Here are my thoughts on some of the most popular apps.

In this sense, Evernote is perfect, because it becomes a repository of their work that they can draw upon for the rest of their lives.I often find that when you are not working in text, completing whatever task it is (annotating a PDF, modifying an image, etc.) and then sticking it into Evernote results in the least friction. 

 

By the way, you might find a shared notebook (shared with all of the students) is useful for this process. Alternatively, they could just email the work directly into your account. Either way, it shows up instantaneously.
