Pay for premium or notes get deleted?

Recommended Posts

OK, I've had this account about a year but never really used it much.

Just recently a few weeks ago, I started actually using the program.

About a week ago I started getting messages that I reached my account limit and I have to pay for premium to continue synching notes. I was thinking OK, I get paid in about a week I'll upgrade then. (this never-ending winter has been brutal on my budget).

So apparently if you're at your artificial limit and make a stray keystroke in a note, the whole note gets deleted. Gone. Doesn't exist anymore while a very rude popup says you must PAY or your notes will continue getting deleted ("not synchronized"). I'm currently missing 3 notes because of this.

I've been watching my account under tools/account info and watching the countdown-

5 days left in cycle

4 days left in cycle

3 days left in cycle

2 days left in cycle

1 day left in cycle

0 days left in cycle (YAAY!!)

0 days left in cycle

0 days left in cycle

Yes, evernote has been telling me for 3 days there are 0 days left in the cycle and I can't synchronize until the counter expires. I have no idea if the notes that have been maliciously deleted even still exist somewhere- which is what I've been waiting to see.

I've worked in IT for over 20 years and I've never seen a company that would so maliciously and proactively delete a user data on purpose like this in an attempt to extort them to pay.

I get paid tomorrow and one thing I won't be paying for is to upgrade my account here.

While I do kind of like the one program/interface/organization features, I think I'll stick with Google docs for cloud docs and Word for local the way I always have done.

Thanks for this experience and letting me know what kind of company this is before I started sending my money to support it.

Evernote does not delete your notes. Period. Does not. It sounds like you fat fingered a delete.

BTW, "not synchronized" is vastly different from a delete.

WRT refreshing of upload limit:

Good luck with whatever app you find that better suits your needs.

I'm replying just in case (1) the OP's tone is genuinely reflective of one of those bad-tempered moments many of us experience when software  irritates or distresses, and (2) @clowe assumes 'Evernote Evangelist' means company employee (I don't think it does?) so doesn't take the reply above as neutral.

I've used Evernote on and off for years, through many different versions and platforms (Windows, Mac, iOS, Android), paid (Premium) and free. I still have the very first notes I ever made. Evernote (company or software) never deletes notes 'maliciously' (or at all without your instigation).

However all software does have both bugs and misleading affordances. If really have lost notes, pipe up with some details here or to Evernote support, and I'm sure someone will do what they can to help you.

Actually, I tested it twice (that's how I got 3 deleted notes).

Open a note, type a period somewhere in the note, click on another note, get pop-up saying you are not premium and your note can't be syncronized, go back to the edited note and it has been deleted and replaced with a blank note.

WRT limit: I had been clicking the "sync" button. I just now tried again and now finally it has reset my limit. Perhaps it's set for 4 weeks in the code somewhere and months with 31 days display wrong?

Anyways, the notes that had been replaced with blank notes are still showing as blank notes even after successful syncing. They have been deleted.

2nd Edit: I see now, I found the problem!! I can restore previous versions of my notes by upgrading to premium.

That isn't the way Evernote should be handling notes when you reach your limit, I would really really recommend that you submit a support ticket. Support should be made aware of a bug causing data loss so they can pass it along to the development staff. They may also be able to help you figure out of there is some element of user error here or not.

Yes, you can restore notes with note history as a premium user, though history is recorded about every 8 hours so... not great to recover lost changes made an hour ago.

I also want to point out that it is certainly not Evernote's game to delete content when you reach our limit to try and goad people into buying premium to recover those notes. You shouldn't be losing notes at all!

(and to clarify for crispinb, you are correct, Evangelists are NOT employees of Evernote, we just have a special badge and get to delete spam)

Given the weirdness around this situation I'd suggest you raise a support ticket - if you really don't want to upgrade to Premium,  there's no reason why you should - even if only for a month while you sort out the missing data.  Not sure whether support will be able to help,  but they're worth a try first.  Post the ticket number here when you get one and we can flag it for an admin's attention.

Several facts you should be aware of...

  • The upload limit is like a BioHazard! sign - you don't go past it unless you're prepared for the risks.  It's not a target - when you get close start using a local notebook to hold your notes until the limit resets.
  • "Resetting" happens midnight Pacific Time on every monthliversary of you starting the account,  and yes, it counts down to zero and stays there for another 24 hours before resetting.  You'll find out that happened when you sync after the reset date +1
  • Syncing means you want your changes saved to the server.  You didn't say what Evernote client you're using,  but mobile clients (phones,  tablets etc) don't have local storage,  so expect to be able to send the note content to the server.  If you were not connected to a network at the time, that might explain why the 'new' content got lost instead of refreshed.
  • If your local software misbehaves in any way,  your lifeline is always that there's a copy of your notes on the server;  so don't keep on poking it with a stick - go to the web version immediately and check what's happening,  and come here or go to Support for some more information.  That way you won't lose information.

Hope that helps.

I wouldn't have thought that either, but that's the way it seems.

That's why I came on the forum- to see if I did something wrong or if there was another option. I'm not against paying for something if it's useful, I just literally had 51 cents left in my checking account for the last 10 days because of this never-ending winter I had to buy heating oil again (It's over halfway through April and I STILL have my heat on- ugh)...

I'm only using the Windows client- phone is OK for viewing and maybe tiny edits but not big changes.

I'll try putting in a ticket and see what happens.
