Automatic note of all note Note Links in Notebook i.e. Contents/Index note

Often I use Note Links to organise my notes. I have a primary note which has multiple Note Links to other notes in various notebooks and/or stacks. Is there a way to create this contents/index-style note automatically, creating a note with Note Links to all the notes within a certain notebook or stack?

Any of them! I use OSX, iOS and Web mainly, but I don't really care which one(s) have this function - the more the better.

AFAIK, there is no EN client that does this.  I doubt it would be added since it's basically a function that already exists...   Simply select the notebook or stack you are looking at & all the notes in that notebook or stack are in the results pane.

That is true, but unfortunately you cannot link to that from another note, which is what I would intend to do overall. Expanding my above example, if Buy a cat was a notebook containing multiple notes, not in the same stack as Tasks, and I wanted a Tasks Contents note to have a note link to Cats Index which would give me an index of all the tasks required to buy a cat.

You can link from one note to another ('copy note link' option in the desktop clients) and you can use tags to span across notebooks/stacks.

Yeah, I realise that - I use note links and tags a lot. I just think it'd be a lot quicker to be able to link to a notebook or a notebook index note than having to go to the notebook itself and change the layout from cards to list (especially on mobile platforms where the notebook is part of a stack), or going to the tag cloud and hunting through the hundreds of tags for the one you want (or searching for it and sorting through the results).

 

Maybe it's just me - I've always been one for simple contents-style organisation, like folders in operating systems. One links to the next which leads to the next etc. Mouse/finger barely has to move to access layers of information, especially with the help of there back button.

If you're having to hunt through "hundreds" of tags, it sounds like you're either overtagging or could organize your tags differently.  I have tens of thousands of notes in my main account & rarely have a problem finding the one (or few) I'm looking for.  IE, starting with "all notes" (not even relegating the search to a single stack/notebook), I can find the ONE note that is my cable bill from May of 2012 (out of over 63,000 notes).  It's very, very simple, easy & fast.  I find descriptive titles & keywords helpful.  IMO, if I have to search for more than a minute for the note(s) I'm looking for, then I need to change the way I organize/tag/title my notes.

* I fully recognize that tags are in one sense more general than a folder hierarchy in that they allow a single item to be associated with multiple organizational nodes. But that strength is also their weakness -- they don't allow you to rediscover the hierarchy as you navigate it.

The problem with hierarchies is you often have to "rediscover" it, if/when you don't remember how you organized it. IE, did you file your cell phone bill under "phone", "telephone", "cell phone" or "Verizon"? So you have to go to the bills folder & look for it one of those options. OTOH, with tags (and Evernote's amazing search engine), you have the luxury of not having to "rediscover" how you filed it.

IMO, you're overtagging. IMO, some folks "overtag". Often, tags are not needed if you use descriptive titles, some tags, some notebooks/stacks & keywords. I have over 62,000 notes & have never reached the 250 notebook limit. I'd guess less than half my notes have any tags at all. Probably only about 1/3 of my notes have tags. Those that do have tags normally have only 1-3 tags. IE, all my bills are in Evernote. Although they are in a "bills" notebook, I can quickly & easily find my Cox cable bill from June 2009 by searching ALL notes because the title of that note includes the vendor (Cox) and the date of the bill in YYYYMMDD format. So a simple search of

intitle:cox intitle:200906*

will quickly find the ONE note which is the bill I'm looking for from over 62,000+ notes. And I didn't even use a tag.

You can also net the tags for organizational purposes only. This allows you to collapse the top tier so the nested tags do not show up. Or even the "hide unassigned" tags may be helpful.

I'm not saying I have trouble finding a specific note; often it's remembering which note I want to find! Hence why I like to create Index/Contents notes. And yes, I realise it's easy to go to the notebook or a tag and look through to find it, but I'd rather keep all the clicking/tapping within the note screen, especially when you know without looking where you want to click (i.e. top link then third link then second link then back then third link versus going through cards and cards.

 

I appreciate this isn't a hugely needed function, but I'd find it helpful
