I have an Everdream: Include Tabs, Pages and Subpages ...

Recommended Posts

I'm an Evernote Premium user since years and it's probably my favorite app !

Thanks to the Evernote Team for the job and the help to organise my projects !

But after years I see I'm Everlost in Evernote.

And yesterday I discover Onenote for mac.

Today I dream to see 3 Onenote features in Evernote:

- Tabs

- Pages and Subpages

- Type anywhere: like request in the mac category of this forum here

3 keys to stop being ever lost in my notes

Maybe I'm not the only one ?

Hi. Welcome to the forums!

Personally, none of those features appeal to me very much at the moment, and at least one of them seems exceedingly unlikely because of the way Evernote is designed. However, it never hurts to dream! And, you are definitely not alone. I think even I have asked for tabs in the past. If you search, you'll find others on the forums who have asked for these features over the years.

Interesting ideas. This is rather timely. I was just playing around with OneNote and was lamenting how unnecessarily complex and perhaps excessive for the way I work.

I think this is definitely a case of different strokes for different folks. I don't know if it necessarily reflects a shortcoming in Evernote or some objective superiority of OneNote.

In your case, it's probably great that OneNote is now available for Mac as it seems to be more suited to your workflow.

I've just briefly looked at OneNote... and the idea I get is that the tabs are the equivalent of the note list in Evernote in whatever notebook context. Wouldn't it be overkill in Evernote to include the tabs concept?

I seriously considered OneNote this evening... just took a look through some features, since I was surprised to discover that they too do OCR... and one step further... you can actually copy OCRed text from within an image. I was interested to discover that they also had a Web clipping tool - but very underdeveloped. I came to the conclusion that one of the best things Evernote has got going for itself is the Web clipper onramp. They are far superior in that department. It'll be interesting if OneNote decides to seriously beef up that feature.

Tabs would be convenient in that you could choose what notes you want to be in tabs without them disappearing when you change your note filter. A form of pinning them, I suppose. I do that in Chrome, which is a parallel case.

Tabs can be nested. So the first level is comparable to the list view of an Evernote notebook. But if you have nested/sub tabs, then it's clearly different from Evernote.

Having said that, I still prefer the way Evernote (is supposed) to work/used to work for me. IE, with Onenote, each notebook is a different file and you can close notebooks (files). But...Onenote's search only searches the open notebooks. So far, with my migration to Onenote, I probably have 20 or more notebooks (and I'm not even half done with the migration) b/c Onecloud limits the size of the notebooks to 2 gigs. The beauty of Evernote is that everything is one file. If I accidentally put a note in a wrong notebook, I can still usually find it pretty quickly. In fact, 75% of my searches were across *all* notebooks. But with Onenote, if I don't have ALL my notebooks open, I may not find that errant note...

...which is why I am so sad/mad/angry that Evernote becomes unusable on the Windows and iOS clients, once you have a few thousand notes. For a 100 year company, they sure seem to think people don't want to remember very many things.

BnF - I'm only at 11,000 notes but I occasionally run into problems with Evernote freezing on Windows.  To be fair, though, I see that often on my computer...  I really want to stick with Evernote but when I read your forum entries, I start getting nervous that I'm going to have an unusable system down the road.  As far as I know, I haven't lost any notes, just some sluggishness on occasion.  I go back to OneNote sometimes, hoping it will cure all of the world's problems (ok, just mine).  I love the layout options in ON but it is just not as easy to get stuff in there from as many sources as I use as Evernote is.  I've even tried using an IFTTT recipe to add a new OneNote note each time I create a new note in Evernote.  That hasn't worked as cleanly as I had hoped.

Can you give me an idea of what kind of problems you run into?  It seems like it is a lot worse than just sluggishness.  I need to pick one and stop looking back.  Whenever I've tried to use both, my brain hurts!
