Lost a feature to email out of Evernote the old way

Recommended Posts

OK, this may be a bit picky.. but you used to be able to share notes via email through the client.   I get that it probably forced Evernote to host a relay email server but it was so convenient.   Now we are forced to use Mail.app on Mac.  I am a GMail user for work and home.

I can always share a link or other ways.  I am just curious if this is going to be an option to send via GMail?  or is that feature gone for good?

I don't use Mail and I don't remember the app ever trying to make me. I guess it probably depends on how your computer is configured. I'll have to experiment. I rarely email notes, and I guess that something might have changed without me noticing. Which version of the app are you using?

Interesting. Mine does open the Mail app to send it. Did it always?

However, according to the headers in the email, it routes it through whatever email address I have associated with my account. If I have gmail associated with the account, then it comes from my gmail account. If I have my work email associated with it, then it comes from there. Does it matter that the Mail app pops up as the software used to facilitate the emailing if it is going through gmail?

5.5 beta 2 direct download, doesn't seem to (for me)

Mail.app isn't in evidence in the activity viewer process list while I'm sending it.

And the email headers show it coming from Evernote servers.

Hmm, I guess I never thought to check on HOW it was actually sending.  I will dig in a bit too.  maybe it's a little fakey fake on Evernote's part.  How about just opening a compose window for me in GMAIL?  :)

Hmmm Evernote brings up its own little email-like window and sends the email away even when my Mail app is closed.

The share menu does use the Mail.app icon though, which I think is just for appearances and not an indication that it is actually opening Mail.app.

Due to Evernote's advertisement at the bottom of my email, I do not use this feature with other people.

But in the Windows client, it is helpful in emailing notes via GMail from Evernote over to OneNote.

Yeah.. I guess I'd not been using it enough, and went back after reading your post.  yikes.   Bad Evernote.. bad bad dog.   I pay $50 a year, and promote the hell out of your product because it is useful, and never spammy.  Don't mess that up.

Due to the scalability problems with Evernote, I am paying $100 a year for 2 premium accounts. I've reached the breaking point with these silly advertising tricks. That is why I've been moving my important stuff over to other services. Once that is complete, I'm dropping down to the Evernote freebie version.

I'm OK with this level of advertising. I'd like the service to expand, and perhaps these ads will help do that. They are unobtrusive and easily ignored if the recipient is uninterested. I suppose that ideally we would have the option as Premium / Business users to turn off the ads. This seems like a fair solution.

The minimum fair to me would be to give a preference for Premium/Business to turn it off in their account, with the default on, and a note in the Announcements tab and Release notes that it occurs and info where to turn it off.

They still maintain other routes.

  • The Invite friends/Evernote Points on login of the web interface, and in the top left corner once logged in
  • The pop-up advertising to anyone you share a note with (in each and every browser/device until the cookie is distributed)
  • The webclipper pop-up spam (like selling me on Evernote Business when I log into Salesforce)
  • Word of mouth recommendations.  Though if they're going to take the words out of my mouth and say them for me, over and over, that's going to dry up.
  • The usual/original method of providing value which drives one to convert to premium (Phil seems pretty pleased with the high conversion rate, so one wonders why push so hard on the other routes)

commercial adware seems like a less noble space to live in than, Freemium.

If there's a revenue pinch perhaps consider adding a Premium + tier, like say a Box.com.  The additional price point puts my choice of logo/branding colors rather than the hosts, on Shared content.  Plus adds analytics and email notification of sharing activity.
