teacher sharing folders with students (no school-wide Evernote account)

Hi. I'm a tech-pedagogy support person to teachers. The school does not have an Evernote education account. A teacher wants her students to gather an online portfolio. I use EN extensively and know that potentially, EN is the perfect tool for her needs.

I assume that if the teacher got a Premium Account, and created a folder for each of her 14 students, shared each with a student, then her students could create their individual portfolios, each shared with the teacher. The students would use a free account, the teacher a premium account.

Is this the case?

If we can do this, and it is a success, then there will no doubt be many other teachers wanting to do the same thing, and logically a case for a school account.

If I have to, at this early, untried, point in time, ask for an official school EN account, or if students have to get a paid account I will be told to use One Note. Because the school PCs have One Note.

So I am hoping my described set up will work.

Please advise.

Thanks Joostie, glad I am not alone in this. Just to give an update (given that what I have read suggests what I propose is not possible) I have tested this (used my Premium account to mimic the teacher, set up a folder for the 'test student' who has a free account and it all seems to work. The next stage is for the real teacher - who now has a paid account - to set up a folder for each student and we'll see how it works for a class.

One small issue will be that on the school laptops the web clipper won't work as the permissions don't allow add ons. I say this is a small issue because the students will mainly use Evernote outside the classroom on their own devices so it won't be an issue. If they find articles on non-web-clipper-enabled computers they can save the URLs for later organisation into their portfolios.

Happy to keep this post updated - mid to late Sept we will know more.

Hi Richa and Joostie and welcome to the forum,

Not sure where you read that this is not possible?

This is exactly what we would suggest to someone with this type of application. It should work exactly as you have requested.

As to the clipper, I am obviously not aware of your schools computer limitations/regulations, but if they install Evernote on the school computer it should also install Evernote Clipper. You could also look into 'Clearly' which can also clip without all the clutter on some websites.

Thanks for your reply Chris and the tip.

Its not that I read anywhere that what I suggest isn't possible - its that there was debate re whether a premium user sharing with a free user enables the free user to create and edit notes.

Anyway, all good.

Regards,

Richard

Hi Richard,

I see. No worries.

The Premium user gives the person or public they are sharing with one of these choices:

View notes

View notes and activity

Modify notes

Modify and invite others

If the Teacher wants the students to make changes then the best solution would be to select 'Modify notes'. Whilst 'Modify notes and invite others' is very useful, I am not sure that it would be a good idea to allow students to 'invite' anyone they wanted to the 'Shared Notebook'. But that if course is only my opinion!

Best regards

Chris

Hi there,

Just to 'hook on' again:

Great to read that this is possible. In that way I can safely share and allow editing in evernote without the risk of allowing others directly into the account.

Is there a way that I can allow users, on a permanent basis into future notes? To explain, I wold like to have default list of users added to every not that is being made.

Reason has to do with the way we use EN: it is a log for our activity in guiding student with their homework en tutoring (subject specific). We do this as team, on location on the laptop, directly logged into the main account. But, I want my team to have access to all note online and be able to add new notes, in case they need to add notes when not on location.

To give everyone a proffessional account would be far to expensive for a small enterprise.

I'd like to jump in here as well. I am a teacher and I love using Evernote with my classes. I use a shared notebook for each class to "hand out" work etc... I also keep a blog with Pittachio (spelling). This works great.

I'm trying to take it up a notch - What's the best way to have students submit work to me - or even keep an "active" notebook for their work over the course of the year? Would I have to make 160 notebooks? or is the best way to have each student make their own Evernote account (it would have to be free) and then share with me?

Anyone have some ideas?

Thanks,

Hi Robejazz, my understanding is that free account holders cannot share notes or notebooks. Therefore you would set up / share a notebook with each student and set permissions accordingly.

Pretty sure this is correct ... might need it confirmed.

Thanks for the reply and confirmation. So the sharing would have to originate from my end and link to each students free account?

I'd love for each student to be able to make a portfolio of their work and be able to share it with me as the teacher. I guess that's not possible as of now with free accounts?

I guess this is a question for Evernote: Can I get a group or school discount for my classes?? I have about 165 Students.

Hi.

1. Share 165 notebooks with your students. Give them modification privileges. One premium account and 165 free ones.

2. Discount https://evernote.com/schools/for_schools/

I am really interested in following this thread. I teach newspaper which is all online and yearbook. Need a way to edit easily need to try something

Sorry to say; you not only seem to have a problem with reading, but also with writing.

The premium option 'works like charme' and suits my needs completely. It also is affordable.

Hey Karen - we have been using "Live Minutes" to do real time editing of Evernote Documents with students. The workflow that we have for e-portfolios with students uses a different trunk application - Postach.io

Our teachers create a "Live Minutes" workspace for each class. Then they instruct all of their students in how to use Postach.io to setup portfolio blogs from Evernote. When the students have a working Portfolio Blog, they add the URL of that site to the teachers Live Minutes page. Seems to work pretty well so far. It helps to keep the Evernote space decluttered.
