Is there a way to create Notebooks on the fly when using the web clipper?

I agree as well.  The inability to create notebooks on the fly, as well as the limitations on number of notebooks and nesting, seriously reduce the functionality of Evernote.  That is a shame since it does so many other things better than every other app out there.  Its hard to imagine why such a basic function like making a new folder (or NOTEBOOK) as it is called in EV, cannot be added.  In any event, hope it gets added soon.

I wish for the same - being able to create new notebooks within a web clipper be it for chrome or firefox which i both use. It seems rather unproductive to have to file it in a temp notebook and having to navigate into the application itself and creating a new notebook before shelving it there. That's at least 3 more steps added to trying to be more productive which is counter productive :) Gooo Evernote!

I'd like to "bump" this request.  Truthfully, it's not the end of the world to:

1) Start to add a clipping

2) Realize I don't have a sub-notebook in the appropriate notebook stack to group the notes

3) Hop over to Evernote client, add the notebook, then move it to the appropriate stack

4) Sync the client

5) Cancel my clipping attempt

6) Re-clip the web resource

7) Add the clipping to the newly created notebook / stack

I know, I know, some may say, but BJ, why don't you just use tags, that's really all you need...to which I say, perhaps, but I've got a metric tonne of Evernotes in my collections, and it DOES help some of us to be able to sort and group these at the level of stacks / notebooks...which is why Evernote added that feature originally, I'd imagine.

In case you couldn't infer my tone from the content above, there's a HEAVY dose of sarcasm used when I wrote that "easy" 7 step additional process I have to go through.... ;)

My evernote clipper does not sync new notebooks. Is there a manual way to sync it since I cant use it without the notebooks showing up?

Have you tried logging out and then back in to the clipper (this would be done by clicking on your username at the bottom of the clipper). Or perhaps try uninstalling and re-installing the clipper.

For future upgrades try including this much needed option, to create a new note book, in a particular stack straightaway from the web clipper, followed by saving the clipped webpage. This will help us include clipped webpages of a new topic/subject to be organized while we are browsing the web. Many a times we browse subjects on the web, for which no notebooks are created in evernote, so the only way now is to save in default notebook and organize later from the evernote software!. My recommendation may make evernote experience much more better.

Currently no immediate plans to add 'Create new notebook' feature in the Web Clipper.

I wish Evernote would spend more time working on an obvious and often-requested core feature than on advertising expensive products I'm not interested in and promoting its partnerships.

Perhaps the whopping 10 or so posts requesting this feature do not necessarily convince Evernote that it is as "core" as you think it is.

Personally I am pleased Evernote is directing its time towards things like ensuring the clipper is visible on small displays, and enhancing the text editor of the Evernote clients.

If I need to create a new notebook based on some new clippings, I'll do that after the fact in the Evernote app, thank you very much.

Just my humble opinion, alongside yours.

The fact that people don't post in this forum is not a reliable indicator, although a number have indeed posted over the years.  If there's any doubt, why doesn't Evernote send out a survey to all users?  I am quite confident that if asked whether this would be a good feature the overwhelming majority would say yes.

I've been using EN for years (and having a lot of problems with it). I don't need a lecture from you on how to create notebooks after the fact.

I agree, absolutely, that the number of posts here is not a reliable indicator, but that problem swings both ways. You can't assume from posts here that this is an "often-requested core feature" any more than I can say it isn't often requested. In actual fact, neither of us are in a position to make any claims about the frequency this feature has been requested.

Nevertheless, Evernote staff have commented in this thread, so they are aware of the request, and based on their post are giving it consideration. That doesn't really mean anything will happen for sure, but at least they are aware and listening. After that, it's their choice.

I wasn't lecturing, I was stating my own preference. Is it a problem for me to express my opinion? Isn't that what others have been doing throughout this thread? I am going to express more of my opinion below. I hope that is okay.

Personally this is not something I see the need for. It would not enhance my workflow in the slightest. Now, I am going to describe why this is my opinion. I hope that is okay. You are welcome to share your opinion and the reason for it back if you are interested. Maybe I'll learn something.

This is my opinion because:

1) I can create tags on the fly, and because of this I rarely need to create new notebooks. I keep my notebooks to a minimum since Evernote limits the number of notebooks you can have. I try and rely much more heavily on tags rather than notebooks. This is a topic of much debate, the whole tags/notebooks things. In fact, there is an entire pinned thread about the benefit of tags (which contains a lot of discussion about their shortcomings too). I recognize that everyone has their own workflow. Mine is more title and tag oriented.

2) If I'm on a clipping binge, I don't see it as being too onerous to return to the Evernote client and create a new notebook, then plop the dozen or so clippings into that new notebook. A few seconds saved by creating a notebook on the fly isn't a big deal for me, especially since I don't often create new notebooks, on the fly or otherwise.

It is worth noting that nobody else in this thread has really clearly articulated why this is such an important feature, aside from the fact that they want it. I get the impression (impression, because nobody has made anything explicit here....) that it is predominantly notebook-heavy users that are needing this feature, since tag- and title-oriented users can create tags and titles on the fly. So perhaps the root of this problem lies in the user's choice to lean more heavily on notebooks for organizing than on tags/titles, a choice which users shouldn't be "penalized" for, but for which they often are (for example, the imposition of a notebook limit but not a tag limit). Perhaps the root of this is entirely something else, but again, nobody has really made that clear.

I don't know what you seek to gain by constantly contradicting me and others, commenting on our usage habits.  If I found the use of tags, etc., sufficient, I wouldn't have requested this feature numerous times.  We users already spend way too much time in this forum because of Evernote problems.  My version of EN has not functioned properly in about 18 months.  We are customers, not "Evernote Evangelists."

If anyone in an actual position of responsibility at EN wishes to have a detailed discussion of why the feature is considered necessary, although the reason is obvious, s/he should feel free to contact me and other people in this thread.  Or, as I suggested, EN should survey users, including a question such as:

"Would you like the ability to create notebooks while you are using the web clipper?"

1) When have I commented on your usage? I describe my usage, then I speculate that perhaps users that rely heavily on notebooks are disproportionately affected by the absence of the ability to create notebooks from within the clipper.

2) When did I contradict you? To express an opinion that is opposite another is not the same as contradicting.

In fact I side with you, and attempt to sympathize with you, when I say:

3) I am a user and Evernote customer just like you. I just happen to have a fancy "evangelist" badge under my avatar and a few special powers such as deleting spam. I am not an Evernote employee, and I do not blindly defend Evernote. I criticize Evernote regularly, while also pointing out the realities and limitations of Evernote (which some people appear to think is the same as "defending"....)

4) I gain LOTS from participating in this community. Exchanging ideas and discussing opinions here has considerably influenced how I use Evernote. In fact, much of how I use Evernote is derived from picking and pulling bits and pieces gleaned from what other users discuss here. I have learned a great deal by reading about other people's problems and preferences with respect to Evernote. Many things come up that I would not have considered on my own, and which have since become major parts of my workflow. I'd like to think that other users have likewise benefited from my participation here too. I hope that at least a couple of my posts have provided some insight into how I use Evernote that are helpful to them, as much as their posts have helped me.

Show me again where I contradicted you, and where I commented on your usage (in an offensive or antagonistic way, at least)?

This is essential for me and I hope Evernote does not ignore this request for long as it is both brilliant and wanted.  It should have been done a long time ago.

Due to this I have stopped using Evernote for bookmarks and I am increasingly using other ways for storing stuff from internet.  Sad, because I really do want to use Evernote, I just don't want to have to (and also I forget to) go back into the Evernote app later to make new notebooks and edit posts.  That's a hassle that can be avoided if you please listen to your users.

So, please listen to us, it should not be hard to implement it so we can make notebooks on the fly and also deeper nesting.  It's not like we are asking you to put someone on the moon!   Many of us are paying you good money and have the right to be heard!

If you still don't want to make this improvment can you please reply to this post and let us know why you are resistant to do so?

Kind regards

Count me in as another person who really needs this feature. I have tried to love Evernote ever since I tried it years ago, but there were always some glaring shortcomings that were so frustrating to me that I just felt like the developer and I don't share similar philosophy in terms of software design and usability considerations. But then once a year or so, due to all the hype surrounding Evernote I see on the web, I'm tempted to open it up and see if it's improved, and every time I'm still disappointed by very simple things I think it should have/do but don't, despite having been around for a while now.

So today, I decided to try the web clipper, because I happen to be researching mechanical keyboards at the moment. Immediately, I ran into the problem of not being able to create notebooks on the fly, and it boggled my mind the level of shortsightedness that resulted in this design decision. So again, it just seems like I have a very different philosophy than the developer. At this point, I have to wonder if I should ever bother checking up on Evernote's progress from now on.

My notebooks do not sync from evernote to the chrome web clipper. Has anyone else had this problem recently - and how can I fix this?

Also, I second the motion that adding new notebooks from the Chrome extention is critical to my functionality of using Evernote - and I have now asked everyone in my office - and they agree that without this function the web clipper is lacking a central functionality.

Thank you

1) Are the notebooks that fail to show up "Local notebooks" by any chance? Local notebooks will not show up as a possible destination in the Clipper.

2) Are you absolutely sure you are logged into the same Evernote account in both the Desktop client and the Web Clipper?

Why is something this fundamental a problem for this long? It has been several YEARS that this has been asked for and is not a resource-intensive modification. This clearly shows a disregard for the user experience, much like what Meetup.com and Facebook.com do, which is push change labeled as 'improvements' while not listening at all to their users.

As an executive deciding if our company is going to invest the time and resources into another platform, I am disinclined to encourage our team exploring the better feature, as I am not interested in doing business with a management team that is unresponsive and essentially disconnected from their customer base. If there are Evernote employees who have been pushing for this feature that has been held down by some dysfunctional aspect of your management team, I would suggest bringing this back up again.

Update: We just released Web Clipper 6.9 and it has two new notebook features:

  • create new notebooks (business or personal)
  • refresh notebook list, in case you created the notebook elsewhere
