Whenever I try to use Evernote (v4.6.2) on my desktop I get the message "Could not connect to server" yet I am online at the time. I have no problems connecting through the same router/modem on my laptop, tablet and smartphone. Any ideas ??  I have uninstalled and installed latest version 4.6.2

Hi - welcome to the forums.  Although you're connecting to the internet at any given time,  you're not speaking to Evernote's servers,  which is what your system needs to do to 'sync'.  Depending on what time of day it is,  how big your database is,  how many changes you make and whether the other 40M or so users (or at least their systems) are awake and active,  you might find things a touch busy.  If it's a temporary thing and you find a sync happens within a few hours,  don't worry.  If it's a permanent situation and you can never sync - have a look at the web version of Evernote to see whether your system is lying to you.  Do you have your latest notes online?  If so,  see previous comment - don't panic.  If not,  I suggest you raise a support ticket.

On the general subject of reinstalling Evernote,  I'd suggest that unless you have only just installed it for  the first time,  it isn't something you want to rush into - I'd want to make sure all Evernote activity was shut down,  I had backed up my local folder(s),  and removed all traces of the first install with something like Revo before starting again.  Try here for advice (and possible heckling) or raise a support ticket before starting with the major surgery!

I use Evernote constantly but don't speak for them.  Opinions here are my own based (more or less) on age,  experience,  and common business sense.

Evernote read what's posted here,  and take it into consideration setting priorities;  they don't normally comment on individual cases,  or offer any forecasts or promises on whether or when a new feature might be released.
