This weekend I'll give EN 5 a go, and get you more feedback.
This is going to be some unwelcome news. I'm trying to be objective about it. We all want a fantastic and successful user experience for Evernote on iOS, right?
I did give EN 5 some testing, and I'm really sorry to say that I don't think I could use this, and if I was a new customer, I'd find a different platform. Fortunately, I kept the old .ipa and was able to reinstall it. I have alternatives for getting notes in.
Show-stopping problems:
1. My "Premium Features", "Places", "Tags", and "All Notes" tabs have turned black and are not usable. Turns out this is caused by fullscreening a note. This is kind of an important fix: Using a feature causes loss of functionality in the program. Ticket 16051-182197, with some console logs that KVO warnings during fullscreening a note and a screen shot.
2. Scrolling notes is slow/stuttery, even fullscreen. From what I can tell, something about the notes is throwing the note into offscreen rendering, probably the rounded corners and the dimmed "prior view". Offscreening is the death knell for screen performance, especially on slow (iPad 1) or retina (iPad 3) machines. Users (including me) expect awesome performance on iOS; losing some UI fanciness is worth it. Ticket 16051-182185
Anything I can do to help, let me know.

Let me start by saying that I think the update looks great. And I know the Evernote people are working really hard on this.
But please please please explain to me why IN THE NAME OF ALL THAT IS GOOD AND HOLY IN THE WORLD EVERNOTE SIMPLY REFUSES TO LET US VIEW NOTES ON THE IPAD AS A LIST!!!!?????
Why do you insist on forcing customers to view everything in these cards? Why can't it be an option. Not all of us like the cards!!!!!
Is it that hard to provide a list view option? It can't possibly be.
Please? PLEASE?
Same here
- The list view was more efficient and nicer than any of the new views
- Did you guys just hire Scott Forestall? Faux leather or paper for the notebooks and a generic dumbing down of the user interface making sure that occasional users who do 2 or 3 notes won't ever be bothered by functionality?
- Please don't let him touch the web interface, which has a nice, efficient and dense view. (Btw, this web view seems to not be quite functional on Safari on the iPad. On the other hand, it's the only thing that works on WIndows RT, where the Metro app is very basic and unfortunately buggy to the extent I don't even manage to copy activity logs out of it).

That was funny
I think we don't give skeuomorphism enough credit for some of its positive attributes, and I also think we (including myself) sometimes misuse the word and misunderstand the concept.
More to the point, though, I think Evernote probably wasn't going for a dumbing-down effect
By the way, the Web client has never worked with the iPad. It is unfortunate. You have to use the mobile site at www.evernote.com/m/

here is my suggestion for how the list view should look like. This is the Reddit app (named Blue Alien): column one is notebooks (with hierarchy), middle column is notes, and right is the notes itself. if you downloand the reddit free app and try it, youll how easy it is. You can then use your finger to scroll left to right to hide the notebook view and fully show the note.

It's not very pretty, to be sure, but it gets the job done. Basically, it is the same display we get on our desktops. There is one riddle I have never been able to figure out with the iPad: Why is it about the same size (in landscape) as my 11" MBA screen, but cannot display three panes? It would be great to have the OSX interface just ported to the iPad along with Snippet View, multiple sort options, and Shortcuts.
But, assuming that is not possible, I am quite content with a different split-screen model. Personally, I am partial to the SimpleNote version: notes in adjustable Snippet View on the left (0-5 lines of text) and note content on the right. Open the app (one tap) and start editing (second tap). It is always snappy, and extremely easy to use. No explanations are necessary (in my opinion). This wouldn't be so far from what we had with the last version of Evernote. The only difference would be the adjustable Snippet View.
Anyhow, Reddit has managed to display an incredible amount of information at once, and for that they deserve credit. Thanks for sharing this!

I would like to swim against the tide here and say that I like the current tiled display very, very much so please don't get rid of it like you did the last time. I like being able to pick a note just by recognising its thumbnail. I'm begging you to please just include the option to switch between list and tiled views on the iPad.
Yep. I agree. Snippet, List, and Card views please
Th iPhone has two of these.

If you sort the forums by replies, this topic has the most by far. It is so crazy that there at least a very vocal, relatively numerous group of enthusiastic customers that have been asking for a list view (or at least a snippet view in portrait) for a very long time, and despite how easy it would be to implement, the Evernote folks continue simply to refuse to address it. Again, I renew my plea -- someone from the iOS team at Evernote, give us some insight into what the thinking is on this and whether we can expect this to be addressed in the near term.
We had Snippet View in the last version. We don't in this one. But, the app was released just a few days ago, so I think it has only been a "very long time" in dog years
I don't know what the developers plan on doing, but from my perspective, I applaud their efforts at improving the app and overhauling the interface. These things take time, and don't always run as smoothly as we'd like. The developers might not join us in the thread, but I am sure they know about our enthusiastic support for these view options.

And here's the thing. This shouldn't "take time." They should do it. They should do it tomorrow by just enabling the same snippet view that they have on the iPhone. If they want to work on the design further after that, then great.
And before someone says that I'm just an entitled troll, I would not say this about any other feature in Evernote. I give the designers and developers a lot of room to exercise judgment and take the time necessary to perfect features. But having a workable list or snippet view doesn't seem like an optional feature. It seems like core functionality. I consider the app broken without it.

GM: We had snippet view in landscape mode but not in portrait. In portrait we had that insane horizontal slider across the top of the screen. And many of us started requesting a normal snippet or list view in portrait mode the day that insane layout first came out.

Personally, I am pretty attached to List View, because I am generally using apps to get stuff done, and since my stuff is mainly text, I don't need anything in the way of graphics. In fact, something like Card View (which was in the portrait mode of All Notes in the last version) is a barrier to productivity (for me). For others, it may be the best way to work, I don't know. The OSX and iOS teams have so far chosen not to include a list view, and seem to be emphasizing Card View. Fortunately, they have kept snippets on the iPhone and on OSX, so I am thinking that they recognize this as a view that people use and want. I haven't been able to convince them yet about List View. The Windows and Android folks at Evernote apparently need no encouragement, because they already have beautiful List View options in the apps. Perhaps we should bribe them to put pressure on the OSX and iOS folks to conform
As for the snippet view in portrait mode that we had in the last version, that was pretty frustrating, and like you, I also found it difficult to work in my account having just four notes available at a time. Basically, it was Card View + note content. It was better for my workflow than this version, because it showed the content of the note, and didn't make me open each note to figure out what was in there, but it still felt a little clumsy. As I have said often on these forums, SimpleNote gets it right, and I think that type of split-screen layout is current the best UI on the iPad for people who want to work in List View (actually, an elegantly implemented Snippet View that has adjustable amounts of text in the snippets).
List View (or Snippet View) missing in the app dramatically impacts my work, but I won't go so far as to say that it is "broken." It is a design direction that just doesn't happen to fit my particular workflow, and it may just be the direction that Evernote wants to go. As far as just putting the iPhone app into the iPad, I think that would not be a very impressive looking interface. Even if they did that right at this moment, it would take a while for it to percolate through QA, beta, and Apple's appstore gatekeepers. Everything takes time, so I think we have to grant them that.
It's Monday morning in Redwood City now. The iOS developers have probably gotten to work, turned on their computers, opened up their email, and our dealing with the deluge. They'll have their hands full this week, I imagine, so I think it's best for us to be patient while they work out what they are going to do next.

I cannot use evernote unless it has list view on the left side of the screen on the ipad. It will take way too much time to scroll through my notes,
It is useless to me now and will have to return to Good Reader. Please bring it back in a new update.

The OS X app has a list view -- at least in the new beta. Why do you say it doesn't?

I am sorry. I was unclear. I was talking about a Vertical List View. This is a feature that many of us have requested because we feel like the horizontal list view at the top uses up valuable screen space while providing only a few more notes (assuming that you still want to see the content of the focus note). The vertical list view was incorporated last spring into the Windows app, and I think it has been well-received there. I am hoping to have it included into the Mac version (and possibly the iPad version as well) someday. It enables you to see approximately 2-3 times as many notes at once. Here is a screenshot:

I'm not aware of another way of seeing the size of each note, sync status, share status. Also when you sort in this view it carries back to snippet view.

First, thanks for all of your feedback. Please know that the Evernote employees are on the forums and listening, although we don't always have time to post responses in every thread.
Now, to the topic at hand. I understand that many of you find the card view on iPad to be less than ideal for your workflows. I can confirm that we are exploring several designs for a more condensed view of notes on iPad and expect to add something in a future release. This will likely not be the exact snippet implementation from the 4.x versions of the client, which had their own issues (the scrolling top list in portrait mode was particularly challenging for people). That said, providing a more scannable list of notes -- especially for folks with a significant number of text-heavy notes -- is definitely on our radar.

If you're going to add list/snippet view, I hope you consider improving the current card view as well.
I like the card view but the problem is that it separates and spreads notes out too much
Example:

I mean, wow, I can see only 3 Notes. And sometimes only 2,5 even.
This doesn't make sense. I think the card view shouldn't separate notes like this at all, separating notes like this would only work in a list view.
Also, again, If you're going to add list view, I hope you do a proper split screen view, similar to previous version of Evernote, so we could see a list of notes and also contents of the selected note at the same time. Otherwise I don't see much benefit in a list/snippet view over a card view.
