Moving forward, we are using the Mac App Store as our primary method of distribution. We provide the direct download link ( http://evernote.com/evernote/index.php?file=EvernoteMac ) on our forums and through support to get around some difficult (and hopefully temporary) issues related to sandboxing. That link should start an auto-download of the latest unsandboxed Evernote client.

after beating my head against the wall I finally followed

Jackolicious suggestion and retreated to 3.3. I only hope that EN 5 will solve the sandboxing problems. If not, I will have to find a replacement for EN

There is no solution within the appstore. It is what it is. Evernote has no control over Apple's policies. However, if you download directly from the website as instructed, you'll have no more issues.

Kyle,

The problem is that because our app is sandboxed, it is completely unaware of requests of this type. When we (as users) perform operations that we expect Evernote to "see," Evernote doesn't actually see anything. Basically, there's no way for Evernote to alert of a failure because it can't even see that any action had occurred, let alone failed.

I recommend that you follow the above instructions and use the direct download version while we work through this issue with Apple.

As far as I can tell, the sandboxing issue still hasn't been fixed meaning the same reliable "Print PDF to Evernote" that I have used for years broke in July without warning and since then I have no documents, no failure notice from the application and a very difficult experience to get the feature back (hunting for a link buried in forums). Basically what I am saying is that you are putting your goals for a distribution model ahead of user experience. I don't think that is any way to keep or create happy users. Looking forward to seeing a user-centric fix.

Kyle

The direct download version will always be available here: http://evernote.com/...ile=EvernoteMac

I think you need to talk with the Web team, because I don't think you guys are on the same page (pun intended!). As far as I can tell, it is impossible to get to the location you told us about through normal navigation on the Web site. Moreover, it doesn't work like it should (see #3).

(1) On the home page (www.evernote.com) I am taken to the app store (http://itunes.apple....ote/id406056744) when I click on "Get Evernote, It's Free".

(2) If I go from the dropdown menu: Products -> Evernote I am taken to a screen with a big green button that says "Get Evernote for Mac," but pushing it doesn't do anything (http://evernote.com/evernote/#). The screen looks exactly like the one you posted the link to, but it doesn't work quite the same.

(3) There is a link below the button that shows a popup with lots of download choices, including Mac OSX, but you guessed it, I get taken to the app store (http://itunes.apple....ote/id406056744). Please note that this is the same behavior that occurs with the link on the page that you posted a link to.

In other words, the only way to get the Mac store app is to (somehow) know the location of the page link you posted, AND to press the big green button. My guess is that very few people are finding the product that you have spent all of this time developing!

That page definitely wasn't working yesterday Jack when I looked at this thread - today loading it automatically started a download, yesterday that didn't happen. Which leaves you with one choice, click the button which redirects to the App Store.

As for the link on the website, I have no idea why we are being sent to the app store now, and I very much hope this is a mistake rather than a new policy. I had to go to the forums and download Evernote from a link to the beta version the other day. I hope Evernote plans on supporting both versions (full featured and appstore one).

There must be some weird cookie thing going on. I click on the button and absolutely nothing happens. This happens on multiple browsers.

The app store is a great avenue for getting apps to customers, and I think Evernote is smart to have a version of its app there, though I wish the loss of functionality could be explained to people somewhere so that they know what is happening.

I guess they 'sell' through the App Store because it's a very effective channel and up until Mountain Lion there hasn't been a huge difference between versions. Sandboxing has changed that and I assume the versions will drift apart which will be expensive for them, but the App Store will continue to be an effective channel and to many users the stuff that doesn't work probably doesn't matter that much.

GrumpyMonkey,

Thank you for the response. Looks like it will work. I do have to ask, however. Why would Evernote even want to publish an AppStore version if it is crippled compared to the "real" version? It's awfully confusing for the unsuspecting user.

Cheers.

edit: The "Get Evernote for Mac" button is broken on http://evernote.com/evernote/

unimpressed.

On any PDF file, if I use the "Print..." function, then go to the PDF drop down and try to save to Evernote, it looks like it's working, but I can't find the PDF in Evernote.

Hi. Welcome to the forums. I guess you are probably using the app store version, which I think has been modified to meet Apple's new requirements (http://blog.evernote.com/2012/08/02/evernote-for-mac-gets-account-switching-for-premium-accounts-and-more/), and so it has lost some functionality. If you change to the regular version that is available through Evernote's site, you should be able to use that feature. See this post for instructions (https://support.evernote.com/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=3545&hitOffset=7+6&docID=24128).
