Cricut??? Memory books???

Recommended Posts

One of my new projects is to create memory books about my mother for her grandchildren and/or great grandchildren. (I'm not doing them for the great-great-grandchildren. If they want one, they'll have to inherit one from their parent or grandparent!) I'm still mulling over how I want to do this since media will include audio, video, digital images as well as printed material (or possibly PDF.) I plan to include genealogy information as well as her favorite recipes & as much of her life story as I remember & can piece together from others. I prefer the digital methods (mostly) b/c it's easier to make copies & hopefully more future proof b/c if backed up properly, they are mold/water/fire resistant. But of my mother's children, I'm the only one who even has a computer. So if part of my audience is my siblings, there will need to be hard copies. But even with it being mostly digital, I can see where I'd like hard copy stuff for the presentation. IE enclosures for the DVDs/CDs. So...

I invested in a Cricut. Wow... What a machine! I've made many, many greeting cards & all our Christmas cards since 1995, when I got my first color printer. I also own a couple Xyron machines, a good paper cutter & that's pretty much the extent of my crafting background. I'm learning to love my Cricut, but there is definitely a learning curve here. As a result, I'm trying to keep track of what carts I used as well as the settings (size, pressure, speed, etc.)

Any other Cricut users who store info in Evernote???

PS - I made my first greeting card with my Cricut. (Oddly enough, a sympathy card for a co-worker who's father passed away.) I took phone camera pictures of it as well as the info about the paper I used, the cart/image I used so I can refer to this in the future. The card turned out just simply lovely, btw.

Cricut is primarily sold/bought as a cutting machine. However, you can buy ink to replace the knife, so you can also draw. Seems like that would be not all that helpful, since you can only use one color at a time.

Hi BurgersNFries!

How is your memory book project going?

I'm a paper-crafter who leads a near paperless lifestyle everywhere but with my hobby: making cards, scrapbooks and gifts from paper for others. I know this is an old post of yours, but seeing with word Cricut caught my eye! You speak my language. I've been a happy Cricut owner since 2008 and I have a Cricut Notebook in Evernote with anything that pertains to the Cricut: settings, jpgs of some of my favorite booklets and PDFs about Cricut bundles I sell through Close to My Heart. What kind of info do you store in your Cricut notebook in Evernote? I take photos of everything I make and give away or sell and blog about it. I compose my blog posts in Evernote and then copy/paste them into my blog and then upload my photos.

Hi Depmodchick!

Since that post, my memory book is on hold.  I did make a small book that is simply photos, remembrances & recipes of her.  It seems to be a hit & I've made & given about 30 copies out.  But I still want to do the bigger one someday.

About a year ago, I also got a Silhouette Cameo.  I love them both & when I'm doing a project, I have started keeping "the making of..." notes in Evernote.  I will often include what paper pack the paper came from (if preprinted), the digital paper used (if I'm using digital paper), often screen caps of the virtual mats & layouts (I always use Cricut Craft Room) and...the FONT!  Eventhough I'm new to papercrafting, I've made cards on my computer for over 17 years.  As I move from one computer to another over the years, it's always disconcerting when I open up a card (I normally use a very old version of Create A Card by Hallmark or American Greetings) & the program tells me it can't find that font (b/c it's not been installed on the new computer.)  So I really love being able to keep track of the font used in the project, too.

Once the project is complete, I also take pictures of the finished project.

I use Evernote a LOT for my projects.  I keep digital handbooks for all the Cricut cartridges I have as well as some I think I may want to get.  (If I find a cart on sale that I may want to get, it's faster/easier to look at the digital handbook I already downloaded & put in Evernote rather than re-download it from the Cricut site.  Sometimes after viewing the handbook, I realize I either really want the cart or maybe I don't.)  I download them from the Cricut site.  Then I can peruse them from my iPad or computer w/o having to get out the physical copy (if it's one I own & bought the non-digital version.)  But I have to admit I also kind of like having the physical copies for those times when I've had computer overload.  I have to admit I also keep copies of the digital handbooks in Dropbox b/c it's usually faster for me to pull up something on my iPad or iPhone from Dropbox rather than Evernote.  So I just keep them in both.

I use EN to store card verses.  I look for them online.  Often, I'll find a lot or some that I like but are not appropriate for the card I'm making right then.  So I store those in EN as well as websites that have verses I like.  That way I know what websites to go to the next time I'm looking for a verse (and don't have one already stored in Evernote.)

I also use Evernote to keep track of embossing folders & dies I've bought.

Although I use Pinterest, for card ideas I'm really serious about or blog posts that I want to make sure I don't lose, I prefer to put those in Evernote.  I guess I'm kind of skeptical about Pinterest in terms of its longevity.  So if it were to go down today or they lost all my pins (for whatever reason), most of the really good stuff is in Evernote.

I am new to using evernote. I did however enter about 75 CRICUT cartridges w photos tags and storage locations this week any suggestions or ideas are helpful. I was given access to a few shared notebooks for stamps and other supplies like twine and stickles. So I am getting there.

Karen, Evernote is most definitely an integral part of my crafting.  Although I've only been "crafting" (IE Cricut, Silhouette), I've made our Christmas cards for the past 18 years.  In the ~five years I've been using Evernote, it's been very helpful when making the card.  I create a new notebook for that card, screen cap or enter all ideas for verses, digital paper, images, etc.  (That's what I'm doing this week!)  Then I can simply go to that notebook & skim through the ideas & put everything together.
