As for the many companies that settled with Eolas, they might be regretting their decision in light of the verdict.

Those companies include: Apple, Argosy Publishing, Blockbuster, Citigroup, eBay, Frito-Lay, JP Morgan Chase, New Frontier Media, Office Depot, Perot Systems, Playboy Enterprises International, Rent-A-Center, Sun Microsystems (bought by Oracle while this litigation was underway), and Texas Instruments.

Ouch!

This American Life had a quite good episode on the growing patent wars. It literally comes down to numbers when there's a lawsuit on the line.

That episode was brilliant and sad at the same time. Patent translation is a lucrative field, and I used to bring sample patents into my classes for translation practice. One of my favorites was a Japanese patent on pizza. LOL. There was also one for Indian curry. These are fun to read, but think about the man-hours devoted to this kind of skullduggery.

Yeah. It was ear opening when I first listened to it. Still topical on a re-listen.
