Hello People of Evernote Windows

We've got a 4.5.4 Beta 1 for you. The big new things are drag and drop support for attachments and files. For example you can drag an image from a note right into Microsoft Word. We've mainly tested this on MS Office apps, but it should work for many others. There are some limitations, for example you can't drag an image onto Excel or Access. That's because those programs don't support that action.

We've also changed Find in PDF to start on the current page. So if you're on page 3 and you hit ctrl+F, we'll start searching on page 3 and then loop back to pages 1 and 2 at the end. We also added the checkbox for sync on exit under Tools >> options. We also fixed an issue of not showing all your notebooks/stacks in the dropdown, some printing issues with font sizes. Also if you have a notebook or note that hasn't been sync'd, we sync them when you try to share a notebook or a copy a notelink.

The full list is under the release notes, let me know if you have any questions!

The update is at: http://evernote.s3.amazonaws.com/win11/prerelease/Evernote_4.5.4.6170.exe

It is also available if you go to "Help" >> "Check for Updates" if you've opted into Betas.

thanks!

Don't have time to fully test, but just a quick observation that it seem to be running a bit faster. Seem like great work has been done, so I look forward to some exciting developments in an already great program in 2012.

MS products like Word, Wordpad I'm assuming? The technological reason is that there aren't tabs/indents in HTML which is what we use. I think they get converted to spaces?

Not replaced with anything just removed. Makes it impossible to do project plans and such in any envirnment that has windows users that you will need to email documents to. I can't use the share-email function as it adds the sent from evernote advertisment which is also discuraged in the workplace. This leads me with the only possible way to share an evernote formated document with co-workers:

1- In evernote efile->export (chose single html webpage) and save the file to a location on my pc
2- In MS word, file-open, find the file.
3- Chose saveas and convert to docx format
4- reopen docx and copy the entire doc
5- paste the entire thing into outlook

my co-workers ask why I go though all of this when they can do it with a single click in one-note. I'm not even sure anymore.

You can also start in MS word and attach the file into Evernote. There are strengths and weaknesses to every program. I'm sure if you made a post about how you use Evernote and asked for suggestions, you'd get plenty of ideas on how to streamline your flow :)

Content of rtf files is now imported just like content of txt files, i.e. EN now imports content of rtf files with all formatting instead of importing them as attachments This is a great improvement for users dealing with rtf files. Thanks

Dlu, I think that MW did tell us how he/she uses Evernote and then asked for suggestions. You failed to provide any suggestion, so maybe you are not understanding:

- MW uses indentation in EN.
- MW wants to copy and paste from EN into Word/Outlook.
- This is an extremely common use case, and something that I do every day.
- Moreover, what he wants to do is clearly possible - and he even gives an example of how to do it - the only problem is that his system takes many steps, when this is something EN should be able to handle with 1 step.

You respond: HTML doesn't have indentation. Well, that's odd because EN claims to have indentation. E.g. https://support.ever...687&docID=12167

So here's what we know:
1. You can indent text in EN.
2. If you export a note with indented text, then import it into word, as explained by MW, indentation is preserved.
3. But if you simply copy and paste from a note into word, indentation is not preserved

Evernote claims to support rich text copy and paste. It is a bug that (a) it is possible to preserve indentation but (b.) EN does not preserve indentation on copy and paste.

We don't have the same behavior of indenting (tab) as MS-Word for example You can't set tabs or have hanging indent, etc. The indent we do have is a page level indent.

I think copy-pasting into MS Word is still be a work around for him. I think overall he'd like a quick way to share with colleagues. I'm curious why MW doesn't paste directly into the email client, but I strongly suspect I'm missing something obvious.

Also, what I was asking for was a higher level use-case. Something like, I use Evernote for meeting note that I need to email to my colleagues. They are required to put it into Word and save it for archiving, and currently it gives them a hard time when I use Evernote.

Because it doesn't work to paste into outlook, as stated in the initial post:

Indenting is still lost when copying from evernote and pasting into MS products (atleast on windows 7)

..that's kind of the whole point.

Re a use case:
From WM's post, he says he is sending project plans, which presumably have multiple levels of indentation. (If you are unfamiliar with project planning then this won't make sense, but you can google it). As he says, losing the indentation when pasting into outlook destroys the information he's trying to convey.

I don't get why you won't just acknowledge that this is a bug. When I bold some text in EN, and paste it into Outlook, it stays bold. But when I indent some text and paste it into outlook, it loses the indentation. It's a bug. And I note that this forum itself has indentation that DOES work when pasting into Outlook. So your own forum has an editor without this bug.

STEPS:
1. In EN, type "text". Hit return, then hit the right-indent button. Type "indented text"
2. In a new outlook message, hit CTRL-V.
RESULT:
text
indented text

3. In this forum, create a new post, type "text." Hit the right-indent button. Type "indented text."
4. In a new outlook message, hit CTRL-V
RESULT:
text

indented text

Maybe you should contact the developer of this forum software to help with the EN editor.

Oof, tough crowd...

I didn't realize project planning was a formal term, and I thought MV was talking about tab indents. Which at least in my mind are different. Anyways, lets move on.

Yes we do indents differently than in the forum does. I'm sorry if I came across as ignoring or dodging the issue.

So here's the deal. We don't always preserve all formatting when pasting into other applications. Because we're using HTML instead of RTF, it gets hairy at times. We try to work on it when we get a chance, along with everything else that on our plate. I've marked this down as something to look into.

I was too quick to comment on "simplify formatting"... Many of the first paragraph problems I submitted have been resolved, but interestingly, I ran into one today where I clipped an article on setting up Brother printers with Evernote. First paragraph font and shading was unaffected by "Select All", Simplify Formatting" ...

EN updates continue to break the quick launch shortcut that I have in my Win7 taskbar. However, this update, for the first time, did not break the shortcut in my RocketDock app launcher. (UPDATE: I spoke too soon. My RocketDock shortcut was also broken by this update.)

I guess progress is measured in small steps but I sure wish EN would solve the broken shortcut issue in its entirety!

Thanks.
