Whilst sorting computers in my study this evening I thought I would show you what I mean about the various laptops and macs I am using.

From the left on the back is
White Sony Vaio 17"
Monitor attached to Sony Vaio
Front of left desk
Samsung Q1 tablet 7" with plug in keyboard in leather wallet - I have three of these!
iPad
Thinkpad X200 Tablet with screen rotated
On drawer
Acer 20" beast
Above Acer
Wacom DTZ1200W
Then on right
iMac 27"

The Samsung Q1 is the newer and called the Ultra, this is used on site to programme bits of kit.

The Vaio is my current every day machine

Thinkpad is what will be my back up laptop if the Vaio goes down again and will also be what I use to write notes in Evernote at meetins

The Wacom is a fantastic bit of kit for photographic work

The iMac is used for all my photographic work and my Wife - Claire seems to get in on the act when I am not around!

Regards

Chris

Fun topic.

I think I love you.

I will have to show this to my husband who has referred to me as "computer bound" for several years now. Yet my farm pales in comparison to yours.

AND...the greater question is...

How have you organized all those cables/cords???

That seems to have been one of my greatest hurdles over the recent years. Having them neat & tidy & out of view while still being accessible when something isn't working right...

I have a somewhat smaller gadget footprint (ipad + keyboard + ipod (now an iphone)).

although, to be fair, we actually have a tower computer hooked up to the tv, a netbook, and my macbook pro at home. but, most of my day is spent like this.

I've been a programmer since 1973. I have finally gotten down to one file server, one desktop, and one Android. I'd have the simplest dumb cellphone if I could get away with it.

I gave my last notebook away in January.

Hallelujah!!!

Of course, that doesn't count the server farm in the data center where my clients live.

Wow, that's a lot. I wish i had that much tech...I currently have one of each type so to speak, Desktop, Laptop and an Android Tablet (and iPod Touch?) Though to be fair, the desktop is shared and I don't really like using it...

As a student, I currently carry my tablet around the most. Being new to tablets in general, I haven't really got a work flow down like others. I am considering a keyboard for the tablet, similar to GrumpyMonkey, and you with the Q1 tablet.

Not sure whether to go down the bluetooth route or cabled, (via a usb host cable) something I am still looking into.

GrumpyMonkey, that keyboard looks very cool, but so fragile...I have a feeling something like that wouldn't last too long with me...

EDIT: And, wow. What a balancing act... :P

the keyboard has gone all over the world with me and still looks and feels brand new. i think it is going on three years now. from an industrial design perspective, it is truly a work of art. i strongly recommend the apple wireless keyboard (http://www.apple.com/keyboard/) + incase origami workstation (http://store.apple.c...oduct/H6353ZM/A) combination. everything is protected and it all fits quite conveniently into small manbags like the waterfield vertigo (http://sfbags.com/pr...igo/vertigo.htm).

i see no benefits to getting a keyboard that physically connects to the ipad. it restricts you to portrait mode and is incompatible with other devices. i especially like to read on my ipad while i type notes on my mobile. pairing the keyboard takes no time at all. your devices remember the last one that was connected, and automatically pair up.

My tablet has a micro (mini? Whatever, it is small) usb slot in the same place relative to where the connector slot is on the iPad, and being usb ,would mean that I could use any keyboard...and since I need a cable, I actually would have to use it horizontaI mode, which is how I would anyway.
I am still unsure, cabled or not really...on one side, there is the effortless task of switching it on, and go...but then again...batteries...(I am useless at managing things like that...) Whereas a cabled system would be cheaper (I think) and not have to worry about powering it, but...cables (need I explain :P)

i've been using wireless/bluetooth devices for so long now, it is difficult to imagine tethering myself to a device again. it would be like buying a porsche (my ipad) and hitching a trailer (a keyboard) to it. i guess i experience joy (yes, real joy) being able to go anywhere and work any way that i want, instead of strategically sitting near outlets and/or carrying around a bunch of cords. the batteries usually last me about a week, but i put in easily 18 hour days, so i imagine they could go more than a month for most people. they are rechargeable, and easy to change in and out. i just change them at the end of the week every sunday.

Hi All,

Glad you enjoyed my bit of fun.

I hasten to add this is not my normal state. I was doing preparation work on the Thinkpad, preparing the Samsung Q1 for tomorrow. The iPad is normally somewhere near, Vaio and separate screen always there, iMac and Wacom always there as well. Well the Wacom tablet is not normally quite that high up!

Apart from that, it was all a bit of mess. Normally much tidier.

BurgersNFries, I have two banks of 6 sockets on the wall just under the window. All are taken up. What you can also see in the photo is the Epson V700 Scanner for my photo work. A HP OfficeJet Pro L7680 in the corner for general work and above that is the Epson 3800 which is an A2+ printer, again for my photographic work.

The scanner is going to be put away as it is rarely used. My Scansnap S1300 arrived today and will take it's place leaving me some more workspace.

GrumpyMonkey, I love the Origami Workstation and had seen it but not realised exactly how it all worked together. I had not seen all the photos shown on the US web site. Seems a great and very low cost idea.

Best regards

Chris

I can't even compete here - I have the work laptop, the home laptop, the ScanSnap and a large external monitor for my laptop of the day. There's a few external hard drives and printers and a little box of random thumb drives that mainly come in useful when a someone breaks a computer and needs rescue. I do have a cupboard full of cast-offs - a Sinclair Spectrum, a Dragon 32, and three or four tower PCs that got superceded by the march of technology over the past several years. I keep meaning to build my 'ideal machine' into one of the carcasses but they keep on moving the technological goalposts...
