Using EN v4.0.2...if I open a note and expand the note header at the top by clicking the down arrow on the far right top, there appear two icons at the right margin, near the "Note History" link...one that appears to represent a note with a magnifying glass over one corner, and the other icon is two arrows, one over the other, that appears to be some kind of sync icon.

What are these two icons? And what/when are they used?

They're not active for any of my notes...that is, if I click on them or right click them nothing happens. I'm just wondering what they're for.

Thanks!

I didin't see anything about these guys in the blog post (and there's no tooltips):
Attached File  ScreenClip.png   4.05K   792 downloads

The one on the left (with the magnifying glass) seems to want to light up when the note contains an image, but clicking on it has no effect. I haven't seen the one on the right light up yet.

Thanks, but "note history" was not my question.

I'm glad to see at least one other person wondering what those two icons are.

For me the icon on the left (looks like a notebook) tells me which notebook the note is in. The one on the right takes me to the hyperlink for that note - if the note has a hyperlink (if it doesn't the icon is grayed out).

Ah, nope, sorry -- too much information in the prior screen clip.

The magnifying glass icon lights up when all of the resources (images) have been indexed for searching. The other icon is a sync status indicator, which I think may not be hooked up yet. They'll eventually have tooltips.

Regarding the icons i have one further remark. Well, two, to be honest.

First, you still havn't fixed the animated sync icon yet. A few weeks ago you said, that you knew about the blue non transparent corners of the button. It's not a big deal, but i thought, that you would have fixed this, before the final release of version 4. UI bugs like this make the whole software look like it's still in beta. If you want to make a good impression with your UI i would spend the 15 minutes and remove the blue corners. That's at least my opinion.

Another thing i want to mention is a personal dislike about the delete button in the top bar. I allready pressed it a few times by accident, because i thought it would open the trashcan. I know it says "delete", but the icon is the same as the trashcan icon on the left. I would rather see a red X as a delete icon instead of the trashcan. I think thats more appropriate and the norm. Just do a "delete icon" image search with google. I only found very few trashcans, but hundreds of x'es.

I am guessing that they're still focused on adding real functionality at this time, rather than fixing this (rather minor, in my opinon) cosmetic item. I understand that UI, look and feel, and fit and finish are important, but I'd much rather have an in-note search that works (and it's getting there, gradually), than have a Sync button that's just exactly perfect, if I have to make a choice. But hey, I'm from Maine, where fashion is just a word in the dictionary (and we usually misspell it anyways).

It's funny, because the trashcan really does indicate what happens on a Delete operation, but an 'X', red or otherwise (e.g. Outlook's is black) is just more a part of our common iconography. I've never been a fan of the trashcan metaphor anyhow, and have always thought that having one on the desktop to drag items into is just plain silly (my desktop always seems to be very cluttered with all these silly windows thingies).

Really appreciate the response. But I have to say the "lights up green" effect is so subtle I can barely see it.

If you want something to do :-) .... (that's meant to be a joke -- please don't take offense)....you could make the change in color more dramatic. Right now the only way I can tell if this icon is "lit up" is to put one side by side with a text note (where the icon won't ever show image processing complete). Even then, I have to magnify the screen 200% to see the change.

It's there, but nearly impossible to see. It's not very useful as is. That's on the Windows client - v4.0.2.3162.

Thx!

Well, that's actually a problem of your monitor. It's very difficult for developers nowadays to design a good looking UI, because every LCD monitor displays the colors differently. Cheap TN panels for example have problems displaying these kind of pastel colors Evernote is using. At work i have even problems recognizing the blue color in the headline of the notes, but on a good monitor you'll see that the green icon is actually quite good to recognize.

Although i woudn't change the color-theme of Evernote, i think that there could be used two different icons to solve the problem. The one we have now if the resources aren't indexed yet and a new one with a "checked"-hook instead of the magnifying glass if the indexing is complete.
This or something like that maybe better than one and the same icon, which is greyed out or not.

I appreciate everyone's help on this, and am happy to end the thread. But for the developers, I'd like to suggest you try using different computers and see for yourself how the icons look. I have access to several expensive computers with top of the line graphics cards and monitors for CAD work and on each it's nearly impossible to determine if this icon is in the "lit" or "un-lit" state. If my sampling of computers is representative, you'll see the problem, too.

Did you do your own OCR?

I suspect image recognition has not taken place. This is what my icons look like:

No recognition
Attached File  No image recognition.png   1.02K   549 downloads

Recognition complete
Attached File  Image recognition complete.png   1.02K   549 downloads

I would judge the difference as subtle, but noticeable. :?

#1 - Image recognition had not taken place on one note.
#2 - Image recognition had been done on the other one.
But there is no visible difference in the screen capture of the two icons I posted.
